Abstract:Coauthoring is a conversation among four local contributors to Log 54, Lisa Haber-Thomson, Timothy Hyde, Cristina Parreño Alonso, J. Yolande Daniels, and moderated by coeditors by Ana Miljački and Ann Lui. The journal examines architecture’s reliance on the idea of the single, signature author, that myth’s constant destabilization by actual contingencies and complexities of practice, and the ways in which habit and law are summoned to regulate the relationship between the two. This event will explore the ways that architects and designers coauthor with material and economic circumstances, with institutions, with history and time, with codes, and with each other.Bios:Ana Miljački is a critic, curator, and professor of architecture at MIT, where she also directs the Critical Broadcasting Lab. Ann Lui is an architect, principal of Future Firm, and assistant professor of practice at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College.Lisa Haber-Thomson is a historian interested in questions that lie at the intersections between law and architecture. Timothy Hyde is a historian of architecture at the MIT and the author, most recently, of Ugliness and Judgment: On Architecture in the Public Eye.Cristina Parreño Alonso is an architect and an educator at the School of Architecture and Planning at MIT, where her research Transtectonics explores cultural and environmental implications of expanded temporal sensibilities in architectural material practice.J. Yolande Daniels is an Associate Professor in Architecture at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her work bridges between operative constructions and critiques of form, and between the practice of studioSUMO (which she co-founded with Sunil Bald in 1995) and independent research. She is a member of the Black Reconstruction Collective.
