The Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural and Educational Center Inc. (The Clemente) is a Puerto Rican/Latino cultural institution that has demonstrated a broad-minded cultural vision and a collaborative philosophy. While the Clemente’s mission is focused on the cultivation, presentation, and preservation of Puerto Rican and Latino culture, it is equally determined to operate in a multi-cultural and inclusive manner, housing and promoting artists and performance events that fully reflect the cultural diversity of the Lower East Side and the city as a whole.

On Oct 11, 2022, for one night only, we will present “Music for the Eyes” our Flamboyan Theater in collaboration with Seña y Verbo: Teatro de Sordos all the way from Mexico City!Immerse yourself in a post language and sensory experience like none other and witness a theatrical experience that makes the magic of theater accessible to all. For wheelchair accessibility and additional accommodation please email us at: sreeserdelrio@theclementecenter.orgLiterally translated as “Sign and Word: Deaf Theater”, this one-of-a-kind artistic and educative project centers the experience of performers with disabilities. In the manner of a small chamber ensemble, three Deaf actors and a Hearing director perform a dialogue with music, which transfers the essence of musical language into image and story. Using a book of drawings in place of a musical score, the actors and director playfully explore the rhythm, punctuation, cadence, and spirit of music that can be seen and heard. Perfect for families after the long weekend! D﻿oors open at 6PM.AboutSeña y Verbo: Teatro de Sordos (which literally translates as “Sign and Word: Deaf Theater”) is a one-of-a-kind artistic and educational project in Latin America. Since its foundation, in 1993, Seña y Verbo has achieved international recognition for its high-quality theater and for the impact it has had on Mexico’s Deaf community. Our professional theater company, comprised of deaf and hearing actors, presents plays for adults and children throughout the year. In these plays, Mexican Sign Language is combined with spoken Spanish, creating shows equally enjoyed by the Deaf and the Hearing.
