Sinfonia da Camera Presents: An Homage to Mozart

Mozart, Symphony No. 38 in D Major, “Prague” K. 504 Haydn, Sinfonia Concertante in B-flat Major, Hob. I:105 (Michael Barta, violin, Amy Catron, cello, John Dee, oboe, Henry Skolnick, bassoon) Mozart, Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major, K. 488 (Ian Hobson, piano) Ibert, Hommage à MozartJoin Sinfonia da Camera in this celebration of Mozart and his mentor, Haydn. The program begins with Mozart’s Symphony No. 38, “Prague,” which contains a first movement that many critics consider “the greatest single symphonic movement Mozart ever composed.” The program then shifts to the work of his mentor, Haydn, and his Sinfonia Concertante composed during the first of his visits to London in 1792. The solo group generally plays as a lightly accompanied chamber ensemble rather than as individual soloists, but the finale features a wonderful operatic recitative for the violin. The orchestra then welcomes Maestro Hobson to the piano for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23—the most charming and delightful of the 3 piano concerti Mozart composed in 1785-86. The program concludes with Ibert’s brief Hommage à Mozart, written for a Mozart bicentennial celebration in 1956. This diverting and polished "Rondo for orchestra" in Neo-Classical style frequently and wittily hints at Mozartian stylistic phrasing.
