Citizen Artist™: An Alternative Path to Studying Environmental Issues

Natural History Institute

In this talk, Dr. Lee Ann Woolery discusses Art-Based Perceptual Ecology and her community science research studying ecological change.

What if you could engage in other ways of knowing, use all your senses, and employ your creativity to understand the natural world at a deeper level? In this talk, Dr. Lee Ann Woolery will discuss Art-Based Perceptual Ecology (ABPE), an alternative research methodology she uses to study ecological system change. She will share the origins of these research methods as well as Citizen Artist™, a participatory science research platform she founded. With this platform, community members can learn to engage in and contribute to research on environmental issues. Attendees will learn about some of the ongoing research projects these creative co-collaborators are engaged in, such as: “The Litmus Test Dress”, an assessment of water quality in aquatic ecosystems with a focus on social and environmental justice issues. Alternative approaches for engaging with the natural world, such as ABPE, can empower underrepresented populations to get involved and be part of finding creative solutions to environmental issues.Doors open at 6:30pm.*The event is free but space is limited and registration is required to attend. Masks required in the building. The talk will be live-streamed to our YouTube channel for those not able to attend in person.Put these methods into practice at Lee Ann's follow-up field workshop, happening Saturday, September 24th.
