Barrington's White House is an historic venue offering high-quality events including performances, concerts, artists, authors and repertory theater. This extremely powerful exhibit features photographs and images of more than 36 personal artifacts brought to America as families fled persecution and war. It includes moving stories of Chicagoland survivors of the Holocaust and other genocides as told through their everyday, personal belongings. The exhibit allows the viewer to walk in a survivor’s shoes and experience through their eyes the strength and courage that was required to survive genocidal atrocities.The exhibit features collaborative artworks by celebrated photographer Jim Lommasson and survivors of the Holocaust and seven other genocides including those in Armenia, Bosnia, Cambodia, Iraq, Rwanda, South Sudan and Syria.Throughout the exhibit, attendees will discover the stories of genocide survivors, including:Ralph Rehbock, who escaped death in Germany with his family during synagogue burnings in 1938 and saved his family’s cherished train set.Mirsad Causevic, who was captured by Serb forces in 1992 and was sent first to the notorious Omarska concentration camp and then to a second camp at Manjaca. He saved the set of playing cards and recipes displayed in the exhibit.Immaculee Mukantaganira, who lost her husband and two daughters as well as many relatives and friends in the 1994 Rwandan genocide against the Tutsi. She recovered meaningful items of clothing from her daughter’s discovered gravesite as well as a family photo album.Interactive Virtual Survivor StoriesAttendees will have the extraordinary opportunity to hear high-definition interview recordings paired with voice recognition technology, which enables survivors to tell their deeply moving personal stories and respond to questions from the audience, inviting visitors to have a personalized, one-on-one ‘conversation.’
