Violinist Philippe Quint celebrates the 100th birthday of Argentinian composer and tango master Astor Piazzolla.

Barrington’s White House 2022–2023 season opens with a spectacular presentation by Grammy-nominated and world-renowned violinist Philippe Quint and accompanist Jun Cho. In “Astor Piazzolla @100,” Quint celebrates the 100th birthday of Argentinian composer and tango master Astor Piazzolla with an extraordinary recital and multimedia presentation of Piazzolla’s work.The single most important figure in the history of tango, Piazzolla created a whole new musical genre based on Argentina’s national dance. Breaking boundaries and revolutionizing traditional tango, he introduced the world to tango nuevo: a fusion of tango, jazz, klezmer, and classical music. The Piazzolla style is bold, unique, immediately recognizable, and utterly irresistible.Piazzolla was a prolific composer in the early part of the 20th century during the “Jazz Age” whose unique music was influenced by Duke Ellington, Bartok, and Stravinsky. Philippe Quint began creating the program “Astor Piazzolla @100: Between Angels and Demons” in 2018 and 2019 but was interrupted by the pandemic, when he conceived of recording Joffrey ballet dancers on video to accompany his music. Now he presents this extraordinary performance for our Barrington’s White House audiences to enjoy; supporters may remember Phillippe from his 2019 presentation of “Chaplin’s Smile,” a retrospective on Charlie Chaplin.One of the most versatile and imaginative artists on the concert stage today, violinist Philippe Quint is internationally recognized for his unique approach to classical core repertoire, championing new music, rediscovering neglected works and creating a new format of docu-concert experience. “Truly phenomenal” is how BBC Music Magazine recently described him, also adding that “Quint’s tonal opulence, generously inflected with subtle portamentos, sounds like a throwback to the glory days of Fritz Kreisler.” Philippe Quint is constantly in demand and regularly appears with major orchestras and conductors worldwide at venues ranging from the Gewandhaus in Leipzig to Carnegie Hall in New York, while making frequent guest appearances at the most prestigious festivals including Verbier, Aspen, Colmar, Hollywood Bowl and Dresden Festspiele. 18 and under FREE with paid adult admission.
