About Training Sessions:

The University of Louisville is committed to embracing and fostering diverse, multicultural faculty who bring a broad range of experiences and breadth of viewpoints that underlie the vigor and creative endeavors of the academy. While university policy mandates fairness in hiring, the effectiveness of such a policy relies on the faculty (both on search committees and all the faculty members of each department), chairs and deans to learn, understand, and proactively follow guidelines that enhance hiring the best candidates.

Such an effective set of guidelines is provided in a newly developed faculty recruiting and hiring handbook (STRIDE Handbook), which has been shared with the university community and should be reviewed prior to the start of, and during all faculty searches. This handbook, developed by the Strategies and Tactics for Recruiting to Improve Diversity and Excellence (STRIDE) Committee, describes best practices to aid in the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion across each stage of the faculty search process to produce diverse candidate pools, run effective searches, and attract and choose the best candidates.

For this reason, if you are serving or would like to serve on a search committee in the future, or if you are involved in any stage of the hiring process, please plan to attend one of two upcoming online training sessions for search committees, organized by the University of Louisville (UofL) Advancement Through Healthy Empowerment, Networking, and Awareness (ATHENA) - HSC Office of Diversity and Inclusion - Office of Diversity and Equity - and the Office of Faculty Affairs. We recommend attending a STRIDE session at least every 3 years.

These sessions will educate search committees about the new search and recruitment guidelines described in the new STRIDE handbook and equip members with evidence based practices to ensure that the search and recruitment process is equitable, consistent with, and conducive to our strategic goals.

About ATHENA:

Advancement Through Healthy Empowerment, Networking, and Awareness (ATHENA) is adapting proven interventions from other institutional ADVANCE programs to improve the professional standing and career opportunities for women STEM faculty at the University of Louisville (UofL). The goal of the ATHENA project is to counter the identified problems through adaptation of interventions from ADVANCE programs that have been shown to be effective. We are adapting these interventions with the goal of working to permanently implement these practices to produce systemic and permanent change throughout the University.
