SFSNAD is a non-profit organization dedicated to the education and preservation of hand embroidery and needlework objects.We do this by offering high quality, educational and exhibition opportunities that honor imagination and creativity, with the goal of advancing the knowledge and practice of needlework and textile arts from around the world.We provide excellence in craft education from beginner to professional levels, taught by knowledgeable educators with diverse cultural and technical perspectives. We engage intergenerational communities who exchange slow craft traditions in a collaborative learning environment. We offer unique exhibition opportunities for both emerging and established artists in our two onsite Galleries, the Hanging Thread Gallery and the Corridor Gallery.

San Francisco School of Needlework and Design

This crewelwork pincushion motif was inspired by the May Morris-designed bed hangings on William Morris’s bed at Kelmscott Manor.

This class will be taught online via Zoom.Class length: 4 hoursSkill level: All levelsClass Description: This crewelwork pincushion motif was inspired by the May Morris-designed bed hangings on William Morris’s bed at Kelmscott Manor. It incorporates the Rose Wreath Panel, designed by William Morris and stitched by May. The pincushion was created using crewel wool on a linen ground and stitched in the authentic fashion of May Morris.In this four-hour class, suitable for beginners, instruction will be given in how the stitches are worked and how they have evolved over time. You will learn Long and Short Stitch, Satin Stitch, Trellis Stitch and Stem Stitch to create this beautiful design.Kit Contents: Crewel wool, lightweight linen, pincushion filling, needles, and instructionsSupplies: All materials will be mailed to you prior to the start of class. You will need to supply a pair of scissors.About the Educator: Mae is a professional teacher and teacher trainer, with a passion for hand embroidery, as well as other traditional crafts, design, and photography. She has been practicing embroidery for ten years and honed her skills through her involvement with SFSNAD as a volunteer and a student. Mae was one of the first people to take SFSNAD’s own Comprehensive Studies Program in Surface Embroidery.Mae has a Master’s Degree in Education and studied Classical Art and Archaeology for five years. Since 2008, she has been teaching, developing courses, and working in academic management in San Francisco, New York, London, and Japan.

Registration for this class closes 2 weeks prior to the start date in order to allow for the shipment of kits and 4 weeks prior for international shipping. Shipping for class materials throughout the US is included in the price of the class. An additional $15 will be added to all international shipping orders and invoiced via PayPal. If you would like to inquire about the possibility of late registration, please contact info@sfsnad.org. Late registration will be accommodated when possible with an additional expedited shipping fee.Cancellation policy: SNAD will refund tuition less a $25 processing fee up to 3 days (72 hours) prior to class start time. No refunds for cancellations with less than 3 days notification before class start time.
