The Oak Spring Garden Foundation is an operating foundation dedicated to sharing the gifts and ideas of Rachel "Bunny" Mellon.  Its mission is to support and inspire fresh thinking and bold action on the history and future of plants, including the art and culture of plants, gardens and landscapes.

Join Lara Call Gastinger for this one-day workshop to learn how to draw and paint milkweed pods.

About: Offset the winter blues and join Lara Call Gastinger for this one-day workshop to learn how to draw and paint the breathtaking milkweed pods that are common in the winter landscape. This class will be for all levels and will include a morning session of drawing in pen and watercolor to learn about the structure of these pods and how to capture the opening follicles and delicate threaded seeds. In the afternoon, you will be able to create your own composition in pen or watercolor. Suggested supplies:HB pencilMicron pen (size 005)Hot press 140lb paper (Arches, Fabriano or anything similar), size 9 x12 or similarsmall water dish/jarbrush (round, size 2), suggest Winsor Newton Series 7 or Raphael Kolinsky sablesmall plate or palette for paint (that I will provide)About the Instructor: Lara Call Gastinger has her undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Virginia and a master’s degree in plant ecology from Virginia Tech. She has been awarded two gold medals (2007, 2018) at the Royal Horticultural Society Botanical Art shows in London and her work is in the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation. Her artwork appears in the latest Peterson’s Field Guide to Mushrooms and ASBA’s Botanical Art Techniques Handbook. She teaches online and at the University of Virginia Landscape Architecture Department with a class that unites both plant identification and ways to artistically document plants. She has gained international recognition with the creation of her “perpetual journal” that has inspired naturalists around the world to start their own.What will be provided: Coffee, tea, and a boxed lunch will be provided to participants. When purchasing a ticket, participants will be prompted to select a lunch option.
