Dr. Dennis Montagna will take viewers through the history and meaning of the rural garden cemetery in the 19th century.

Registered participants will have access to the recording for 7 days.Oaklands Cemetery has served as one of West Chester’s primary memorial landscapes since 1854, but it also holds a place within the larger world of well-designed garden cemeteries that redefined the burial ground during the middle decades of the 19th century. This talk will provide a historical framework to help us better understand cemeteries like Oaklands and the desire of their creators to form public landscapes that would console and edify those who visit them. Knowing more about these often neglected memorial spaces leads us to value them and to make a concerted effort to better preserve them.About the speaker: Dennis Montagna is a Historian in the Northeast Region Office of the National Park Service, based in Philadelphia. He is currently President of The Association for Gravestone Studies and serves on the board of the Vermont Marble Museum in Proctor, Vermont. He holds a Ph.D in Art History from the University of Delaware with a concentration on American Sculpture.Admission is Pay as You Wish!
