Debate: Staying Safe Online

Liberate is an equality charity that welcomes people irrespective of gender, race, age, religious belief, ability, sexual orientation or gender identity. We were founded in February 2014 in Guernsey and have a branch in Jersey.The purpose of Liberate is to educate and inform on a wide range of minority issues and to support those who identify as part of a minority or visible minority, their families and friends. We campaign to reform policies and laws to ensure that minorities can enjoy the same freedoms as everyone else across the Channel Islands. We also question social attitudes and behaviours that discriminate against minorities, and offer advice and help in tackling racism, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, etc.Liberate’s vision is simple. We believe in a fair and equal society, where everyone is born equal and free, and treated with dignity and respect.

<p>The UK Online Safety Bill sets out to make the UK the safest place in the world to be online while defending free expression. It plans to punish Internet companies for failing to censor material that is ‘legal but harmful’. The aim is to protect UK citizens from the effects of dark images and suggestions. But can Government make the Internet ‘safe’ or does that risk our freedom of speech? And who defines ‘safe’? Should we cultivate a healthy suspicion of online media, rather than a misplaced trust in its moderators?</p><p>A panel and audience members debate the issue.</p>
