Poverty in Jersey: the Facts, the Effects and the Possible Solutions

Liberate is an equality charity that welcomes people irrespective of gender, race, age, religious belief, ability, sexual orientation or gender identity. We were founded in February 2014 in Guernsey and have a branch in Jersey.The purpose of Liberate is to educate and inform on a wide range of minority issues and to support those who identify as part of a minority or visible minority, their families and friends. We campaign to reform policies and laws to ensure that minorities can enjoy the same freedoms as everyone else across the Channel Islands. We also question social attitudes and behaviours that discriminate against minorities, and offer advice and help in tackling racism, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, etc.Liberate’s vision is simple. We believe in a fair and equal society, where everyone is born equal and free, and treated with dignity and respect.

Mark Pragnell (Economist and Founder at research firm Pragmatix) and a special Jersey guest will share their insights into the realities of poverty in Jersey and discuss ways in which we may be able to improve the life and prospects of those most impacted by the rising costs of living, homes and social inequalities across the Island.
This session is sponsored by the Jersey Community Relations Trust, who published their Education and Social Mobility report in May 2022, which found that there were key links between educational attainment and wider socio-economic concerns, such as housing, access to nutrition, opportunities for physical exercise and availability of healthcare.
Investing in ways to address social inequalities now has to be a Jersey priority. It is crucial to ensuring that everyone has equal opportunities available to them, not just to survive, but to thrive, improving Islanders&#x27; and the Island&#x27;s prospects.
