The Transgender Issue

Liberate is an equality charity that welcomes people irrespective of gender, race, age, religious belief, ability, sexual orientation or gender identity. We were founded in February 2014 in Guernsey and have a branch in Jersey.The purpose of Liberate is to educate and inform on a wide range of minority issues and to support those who identify as part of a minority or visible minority, their families and friends. We campaign to reform policies and laws to ensure that minorities can enjoy the same freedoms as everyone else across the Channel Islands. We also question social attitudes and behaviours that discriminate against minorities, and offer advice and help in tackling racism, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, etc.Liberate’s vision is simple. We believe in a fair and equal society, where everyone is born equal and free, and treated with dignity and respect.

The issues facing the transgender and gender non-binary community in the UK and Jersey are not the issues you might, at first, think they are. Over the last 6 years, mainstream media headlines have whipped up a storm around transgender and gender non-binary people&#x27;s identity. The upshot has been a rolling back of UK Government commitments on reforming legal gender recognition, the dropping of the T from any ban on LGBTQ+ conversion therapy, flawed legal judgements that have negatively impacted the healthcare of all young transgender and non-binary people, and the banning of transwomen from a number of women&#x27;s sports.For a group of people who make up about 0.2 to 1% of any population (including Jersey) a lot is being said about them, their lives and their identities by other people at the moment. This is an opportunity to find out from members of Jersey&#x27;s transgender and non-binary community a little of the history of trans rights, what it means to be transgender or gender non-binary and the issues that really matter to them.Members of Jersey&#x27;s transgender and gender non-binary community lead this examination of the issues.
