Screening and discussion led by Hansa Thapliyal and Iram Ghufran

Join us at Common Room (Warehouse 51), Alserkal Arts Foundation, to watch and discuss the film The Outside In (2019) in dialogue with filmmaker Hansa Thapliyal. Introduced by Iram Ghufran, the screening is the fourth part of the Uncanny Selves series, presented this month in conjunction with Alserkal’s summer programme <a href="https://alserkal.online/programme/more-than-human" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">More than Human</a>.The Outside In documents the art practices and impulses of two dollmakers, Francoise and Milan, and the worlds their dolls represent. Francoise left the country of her birth forty years ago to make India her home, and Milan studied art, yet wanted to delve further in the work of craftspeople. The film examines how dollmaking resonates with people and how the intimacy and care in Francoise and Milan’s practice gives art a way to enrich our everyday lives.Uncanny Selves is a series led by Iram Ghufran that examines the relationship that humans have with artificial copies of themselves, exploring new vocabularies that articulate the ethical, political, and creative possibilities of human and non-human coexistence. Iram Ghufran was in residence at Alserkal Arts Foundation in spring 2022.Screening | 6:30pm - 7:00pmDiscussion* | 7:00pm - 8:00pm* Iram and Hansa will join us remotely for the discussion<h3>Biographies</h3>Hansa Thapliyal is a filmmaker, writer, teacher, doll maker. Her works try to move between different, poetic ways of telling stories. Her diploma film, Jee Karta Tha is proudly part of the two dvd set called Master Strokes, showcasing works from across the years, in FTII. She likes to work with material as a way of understanding arts processes. She has worked for long on Kamal Swaroop’s Phalke Project. She conducts workshops for young people for Agents of Ishq. She also supervises the hindi translations for their website.Iram Ghufran is an award winning filmmaker based in New Delhi, India. Her work engages with speculative modes of storytelling, and her interests span the realm of techno spectral forms, nonhuman agency, micro practices of futurity and mythopoesis. Iram’s work has been screened widely within art and cinematic contexts including Experimenta India, Forum Expanded at Berlinale and Visible Evidence 21 among others. Iram is currently working on her doctoral film and thesis at the Centre for Research and Education in Arts and Media (CREAM), University of Westminster, London.If you have any questions, please email us at info@alserkalartsfoundation.ae
