environmental justice & disability rights!

Description: The health care branch of the social justice movement seeks equitable universal health care for all people. Health inequities are seen wherever we see injustice. We will hear how the environmental impacts of climate change and industrial contamination; the disparities in mental health care; and the marginalization of people with disabilities result in health inequities. Health care injustices also exist for those who are poor and/or struggle to pay for health care, the LGBTQ+ community — and all who are “othered” by the wealthy 1% and by our current for-profit health system. Injustice in all these arenas arises in a system geared to enriching the few instead of recognizing we are all connected, and that we are all well only when we are all well.Speakers:Lelieth Thompson, PsyD, is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in Colorado Springs for 8 years. She completed her education at South Carolina State University (B.S. Psychology 2008) and Adler University in Chicago (Master’s in counseling psychology 2010 and Ph.D. in clinical psychology 2014). Her training includes Assertive Community Treatment, correctional, inpatient, and residential treatment, and community mental health. She&#x27;s a culturally sensitive and trauma informed clinician with a passion for working with adults coping challenges due to serious and persistent mental illness, cultural traumas, anxiety and mood disorders, and navigating life transitions. She serves on the Board of the Colorado Foundation for Universal Health Care.Thomas Wilson is a disability and health care activist who&#x27;s retired from Access Living, a center of service, advocacy, and social change for people with all kinds of disabilities led and run by people with disabilities in Chicago. He serves on the Board of the Health and Medicine Policy Research Group, the Community board of the Chicago Cancer Health Equity Collaborative (CHEC), and is a member of ADAPT, a disability rights organization that uses a social justice framework because disability rights are human rights; Jane Addams Senior Caucus; Alliance for Community Services; and Alliance for Research in Chicagoland Communities.Tom is the past Board President of the Illinois Single Payer Coalition. Health equity that includes people with disabilities is Tom&#x27;s passion.Juan Roberto Madrid is a Public Health Professional with 33 years of health care experience, mostly through military service as a Navy Special Ops and SEAL teams. Through multiple Humanitarian Medical missions and multiple combat deployments in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, and the First Gulf War Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Juan Roberto developed a passion for public health, global health as well as public health education and health promotion.After his Retirement in 2010, Juan Roberto worked for some of Colorado’s largest health care provider systems such as Centura Health and HealthOne. While working for these health systems as a Paramedic and Paramedic Educator, he learned how these systems operated at multiple levels. His passion for Rural Health and Health Education and Promotion lead him to complete his Bachelor Science Degree in Health Professions focusing on Health Education and Promotion and then a Master of Public Health degree from The George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, with concentrations in Health Communication &amp; Marketing as well as Environmental Health Science &amp; Policy. Combining his passion for the outdoors and health care have combined in research on how climate change-driven drought in the Southwest has impacted the physical and mental health of farmers and ranchers in the Colorado River Basin.Juan Roberto founded Por Tu Salud, LLC, to provide free health education classes such as CPR, First Aid, high blood pressure education, and diabetes education to monolingual Spanish speakers to empower them to live healthier lives. He serves as Associate Director of Communication on the Colorado Public Health Association Board; Commissioner of the Colorado Suicide Prevention Commission, and Co-Chair of Colorado Governor’s Challenge to Prevent Suicide Among Service Members, Veterans, and their Families.Shattered is a series of webinar events that the Medical Professionals for Universal Health Care presents to highlight these problems and to show how single payer universal health care can help end them. Our goal is to dissolve the silos and highlight the intersection of our compassionate work in each others’ spheres.
