SFSNAD is a non-profit organization dedicated to the education and preservation of hand embroidery and needlework objects.We do this by offering high quality, educational and exhibition opportunities that honor imagination and creativity, with the goal of advancing the knowledge and practice of needlework and textile arts from around the world.We provide excellence in craft education from beginner to professional levels, taught by knowledgeable educators with diverse cultural and technical perspectives. We engage intergenerational communities who exchange slow craft traditions in a collaborative learning environment. We offer unique exhibition opportunities for both emerging and established artists in our two onsite Galleries, the Hanging Thread Gallery and the Corridor Gallery.

This class will be taught in-person at 850 Battery Street, San Francisco.Class length: 6 hoursSkill level: All levelsClass Description: Learn how to build up layers of colorful appliqué to create textured designs for use in a multitude of fashion or home apparel projects. Appliqués are based on geometric shapes which can then be embellished with embroidered stitching. Review examples from the educator’s own body of work, then choose fabric and a design to create your own. Fabric will be provided but stitchers are welcome to bring a favorite patterned or solid fabric from home to work into the design.Kit Contents: Freezer paper with printed shapes, choice of various fabrics, Tire silk thread, purl cotton/sashiko threads, Sachiko thread and needle, needle puller, #9 embroidery needle, and printed instructions.Supplies: All materials will be handed out to you at the start of class. We will provide scissors for cutting paper and fabric, iron, and ironing board (or pad).Please feel free to bring a small sewing kit with your preferred tools. Especially handy is a thimble. Thimbles are very important for this type of sewing, and it is a very personal choice.Class Minimum: 3 students About the Educator: Judith is a SF resident who has been quilting for over 30 years. Her innovative, casual style has been displayed and awarded in national quilt shows. She will be enjoying a solo show at the new location of SFSNAD in March of 2022. Her workshops focus on hand-stitched quilting, expanding SFSNAD&#x27;s repertoire of fiber arts techniques.

Registration for this class closes 1 day prior to the start date. If you would like to inquire about the possibility of late registration, please contact info@sfsnad.org. Late registration will be accommodated when possible.Cancellation policy: SNAD will refund tuition less a $25 processing fee up to 3 days (72 hours) prior to class start time. No refunds for cancellations with less than 3 days notification before class start time.SFSNAD requires visitors, students, and guests to wear a mask while onsite to help protect against the spread of COVID-19.
