Synopsis
A seminar examining the benefits of music making for children in hospital as delivered by Lime Music for Health at The Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and evaluated by the Salford School of Nursing and Midwifery.
The Music for Health programme contains a series of themed strands of delivery including training for medical students and music conservatoire students, and a bespoke programme, Songbirds, which engages children and families who are often most affected by long term hospitalisation, complex health needs and disabilities. Although not delivering music therapy as such, the work of Music for Health is carried out by musicians specially trained in working sympathetically within the hospital environment. Whilst engaging meaningfully with hospitalised children in a way that offers space for a child's communication to be listened to, the role that these musicians offer also provides many benefits to wider clinical practice, largely related to non-verbal communication and relief of stress and anxiety.

This seminar will explore the work of the programme in more detail, and using the Songbirds project as a case study, will examine the techniques used by musicians on the wards, and outline the benefits experienced by staff, children and families. The seminar will also feature demonstrations of some of the music composed by the musicians for use on the wards as part of the highly acclaimed Songbirds project.
Speakers
Ros Hawley has developed specialist skills in the use of live music with children and young people with complex communication needs in both SEND and healthcare settings. She is using her work in this field as the basis for a PhD in Medical Ethnomusicology. She has worked extensively as a lead artist and trainer for Jessie's Fund, Live Music Now! The Royal Northern College of Music and in orchestral training and consultancy projects for Hallé Education, BCMG, Sinfonia Viva and the CBSO. She also has over 15 years' experience as Musician in Residence at The Seashell Trust where we worked alongside audiologists, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists arts organisations and teachers in devising a range of programmes using live music to support learning and cognitive development.
Mark Fisher is a composer and guitarist working as a musician in healthcare, SEN and palliative care settings for fifteen years. A keen improviser and composer, he specialises in using music to create a sympathetic environment for participants, whether hospital patients, service users, trained professional staff or musicians, to relax, interact together and develop their creative skills. Mark has worked on projects with adults with cystic fibrosis, children, families and staff at Robin House Hospice, Scotland and participatory projects with acclaimed mental health arts organisation START. He also has over 15 years' experience as Musician in Residence at The Seashell Trust where we worked alongside audiologists, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists arts organisations and teachers in devising a range of programmes using live music to support learning and cognitive development.
