Japanese Tea Ritual Events(Tea ceremony)

This is a compilation of events organized by Yoshitsugu Nagano, a Japanese tea master. He is the youngest professor of the Ueda Soko school of samurai tea ritual, which has a history of over 400 years in Hiroshima, and is currently based in New York.

In Japan, new tea leaves are picked from April to May.Plucked tea leaves are not immediately processed into matcha, but are instead dried and processed into chips, called &quot;tencha,&quot; which are then aged for several months.A large unglazed jar called a &quot;Chatsubo(茶壺)&quot; is used to age tencha, which is the equivalent of a wine aging barrel.Each tea company has its own unique method of filling the jar, and the details of this method have not been made public until now.In this lecture, Mr. Yoshiki Mizoguchi, president of Ujien Seicha, which manufactures matcha for the grand tea master of the Ueda Soko school of samurai tea ceremony, will give a lecture on the previously undisclosed method of filling tea jars. Participants can make a “Hantai(半袋),&quot; a paper bag made of pure white Japanese paper to hold tea leaves, and actually put the tea leaves into the tea urn.You can also actually see how the tea jar lids are sealed using Japanese paper, which is done after the tea leaves are packed.About Chatsubo(Tea leaf jar)The tea jar, used for aging tea leaves, is the most prestigious of all tea utensils. Originally, large Chinese ceramic jars were imported to Japan and later used by the Japanese as tea jars for aging tea leaves.Because these jars were used to store tea leaves, which were very expensive at the time, they gradually came to be treated as an exceptional tea utensil. In the 16th century, when the tea ceremony reached its golden age in history, the price soared to the point that it was said to be worth as much as a castle owned by a feudal lord.In this lecture, Japanese tea master Yoshitsugu Nagano will explain the history of tea jars, famous tea jars, and points to appreciate tea jars, using actual tea jars.Later, Mr.Nagano will do the tea ceremony and serve you tea with fresh tea before maturing!
