How does a gene become a protein? Many of us are familiar with the central dogma of biology: DNA codes for mRNA, which is translated into a protein. But how does that process work at the molecular level? Even in the last few years, the understanding of these processes has grown by leaps and bounds, and we now have the power to understand these processes at the atomic-scale resolution. In this class, we will use 3D molecular modeling to investigate the incredible molecules that facilitate the decoding of our genetic material, and the creation of proteins and enzymes.This is an interactive class where students will not only learn how these molecules work, but will also learn how to locate, load, and render their beautiful 3D molecular structures. To do this, they will be trained on how to use a free, 3D molecular computer modeling program, <a href="https://pymol.org/2/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">PyMol</a>. Even though we will be exploring some of the most complex structures in biology, we will start the class with the chemical basics, reviewing bonding, molecular geometry, and interactions. We can then begin to explore some of the molecular machines of the central dogma, such as DNA polymerase, RNA polymerase, and the ribosome. We’ll also be discussing the theory behind some important laboratory techniques like DNA sequencing and PCR. No previous science or coding experience necessary. Just curiosity and a laptop! COVID-19 Safety Notice: As many of you have heard, New York City will be lifting the indoor mask mandate and vaccine mandate beginning March 7, and individual businesses can set their own guidelines. Genspace has decided to continue our mask and vaccine requirement for both participants and staff for the time being. This is a socially-distanced event. Masks are required to be worn for the duration of the event. If you are feeling unwell, suspect that you have been exposed to COVID-19 or test positive, please do not attend. Upon entry, guests are required to fill out our <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSchQ8tAFgvj7oYeT9HmwM-R7e8khB_-rqoRkXHPtrLWwmVHbw/viewform" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">COVID-19 health screening form</a> and show a vaccination card.If you have had COVID-19 within the past 15 days, a negative PCR test is required before coming to Genspace. Please show Genspace staff your proof of negative PCR test results. Rapid tests and minimum quarantine period of 5 days are not accepted without a negative PCR test. Given the rapidly changing circumstances surrounding the pandemic, please note that terms of this event are subject to change, and we will update you ASAP. If you cancel after our 7-day policy, we cannot refund your ticket, but we can exchange and offer credits toward future classes. If you have signed up for Biohacker Boot Camp, we will automatically transfer your registration to the next month’s dates unless you tell us otherwise. For all other classes, we will provide a personalized discount code to apply the cost of your class to a future workshop of your choice.

<h3>Meet the Instructor </h3>Daniel Fried, Ph.D. (he/him) is an assistant professor of chemistry at St. Peter’s University and earned a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Yale University. He’s run programs for biochemistry learners of all ages around the Greater New York area, and believes that everyone, regardless of age or background can learn high-level science. His program, called Biochemistry Literacy for Kids, is now used by around 200 families around the US and around the world, and the curriculum has been deployed in public and private schools. Part of his unique teaching method stems from his experience as an artist and musician. He blends pedagogy from the arts with science, creating a learning environment that allows students with diverse learning styles to thrive. In his courses, Dr. Fried emphasizes 3D molecular modeling to show the beauty, form, and function of the biomolecular world.
