Western WIFFLE Ball Classic: Presented by Big League WIFFLE Ball

Big League Wiffle Ball (BLW) is America's first professional wiffle ball league. BLW started as a backyard wiffle ball league, with just four teams, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The ensuing fall, BLW announced what's now one of the largest tournaments in the country, the Western Wiffle Ball Classic at Scottsdale Stadium. From 2020-2025, BLW held a backyard league every summer, hosted major tournaments throughout Arizona, saw an enormous rise in social media following, and played a World Series at AT&T Stadium. In the fall of 2025, BLW launched America's first professional wiffle ball league. The 2025-26 season features 10 city-based franchises competing in four regional tournaments (Scottsdale, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Dallas) from October-February. Team owners include Kevin Costner, Gary Vaynerchuk, Dude Perfect, Marc Lasry, and other successful individuals.

<h3>All ages are invited to join us for The Raising Cane's 2022 Western WIFFLE Ball Classic: Presented by Big League WIFFLE Ball at Scottsdale Stadium on October 29, 2022. </h3><h3>New in 2022 - Divisions </h3>All new in this year's tournament are divisions! Upon registration, choose between a Competitive, more skilled and experienced division, and a Recreational, more relaxed division. Both divisions include playoffs and a championship. Rules remain the same across both divisions.​42 Teams will compete in a tournament at the Spring Training home of the San Francisco Giants. Games are 4 innings or 35 minutes; whichever comes first. Teams can choose between two divisions upon registration: Competitive and Recreational. All teams are guaranteed 4 morning games before being seeded for the single elimination playoff bracket. First place and second place teams in both divisions will receive a commemorative trophy.Players can participate in a home run derby in between games. The cost is $5 per person. <h3>Details:</h3><ul><li>Each team can have 3 to 5 players. All ages are welcome.</li><li>Defense will have 3 players, which includes the pitcher.</li><li>No base running. There will be designated singles, doubles, triples and home runs. </li><li>Teams will need to bring their own bats and balls, which will be inspected before play. Scuffing is allowed, but no other advantages. </li><li>Teams are required to dress in the same color. </li><li>There will be a $5 charge to participate in the day-long home run derby, which can also be paid onsite.</li><li>Please see a full list of rules for the tournament and home run derby below.</li></ul><h3>Attendees:</h3><ul><li>General Admission tickets are available for $10 through the Eventbrite event page or at the door. Youth under 13 years of age are free. Player entry is covered by team registration fee. </li><li>All guests will be required to bring their own seating, blankets, etc.</li></ul><h3>Prohibited Items:</h3><ul><li>The following items are not permitted in the stadium: illegal drugs, fireworks, firearms or weapons of any kind, pepper spray, and outside food and beverage (except for one sealed, plastic bottle of water). <h2>Western WIFFLE Ball Classic Rules</h2>The Western WIFFLE Ball Classic will play as follows:1. Sportsmanship: Any player or team, engaging in behavior that the tournament director deems to be “unsportsmanlike conduct” will be removed from the tournament immediately at the director’s discretion. Fans and players watching games must refrain from commenting on calls. Failure to comply will result in the fan or team’s removal from the event. Captains are responsible for monitoring fan behavior. If that monitoring becomes difficult, the captain shall seek the assistance of a Commissioner.

2. Umpiring: Teams will umpire their own games. Both teams will do their best to keep the integrity of the game by making honest calls. Teams will have 20 seconds to agree on any disputed calls. If no resolution in the 20 second time period, that play will be null and void. Players will announce score after each run scored and agree on score after each half inning. Final score will be the winning team’s responsibility to report to the Commissioners table located in centerfield.

3. Home/Away Teams: The home team will be decided by a coin toss or “rock, paper, scissors” between captains.

4. Tie Breaker Rule to Qualify for the single elimination playoffs in both divisions: If teams are tied, the tie breaker will be head to head. If a tie still remains run differential will be used to break the tie.

4. Playoffs: The top 8 teams in both competitive and recreational divisions will qualify for a single elimination playoff bracket. The winners will advance 

5. Tie Breaker Rule for playoffs: There are no ties. Extra innings start with a runner in third and will continue until the game is complete.

6. Gameplay: There will be 3 outs per team per inning. Four balls is a walk. Three strikes are an out. A ball foul tipped into the strike zone with two strikes is an out. A ball in play caught in the air is an out. Each inning will begin with 0 balls, 0 strikes and 0 outs. A grounder caught in front of the pitcher’s mound, on the ground or before the line between the bases is an out. Any hit ball bobbled, defined as the ball hitting the ground again after hitting a fielder’s hand or the fielder using 2 or more attempts to secure the ball, will revert to a hit in the form as if the error wasn’t committed. There is no tag up, sacrifice fly play, or double play rules in this tournament. Caught fly balls are outs and the runners do not advance. Check swing calls are the pitchers&#x27; responsibility. Fair and foul ball calls will be made by the batter. Single/double line calls will be made by the fielder closest.


7. Strike Zone: A strike zone for the recreational division will be used that is approximately 36” high, 24” wide, and 12” above the ground. A smaller strike zone for the competitive division will be used that is approximately 30” high, 22” wide, and 15” above the ground. Any pitch that hits the strike zone without hitting the ground is a strike. Any pitch that does not hit the strike zone is a ball. Any pitch that hits the batter is a ball. There are no balks.

8. Equipment: All bats used in league play must be regulation, yellow Wiffle® bats. The entirety of the bat will be allowed to be taped up with bat tape/duct tape. Excessive amounts of tape (½ inch thick of tape/4+ layers) may result in a bat being deemed illegal (tourney director discretion). Bats may not be modified in any other way. Balls must be baseball size Wiffle® brand. Scuffing is allowed, but no other modifications including cutting balls. The honor system is in place and all equipment will be inspected and approved for use by the opposing team.

9. Attire: Uniforms are not provided or mandatory. Same colored shirts are encouraged but not required. All shoes will be flat-soled (no cleats, turf shoes, spikes, trail running shoes, etc.).

10. Rosters: Teams will have three to five players on their roster. No team may have fewer than three players in the game at any time. All players bat in a predetermined order. Only three players play in the field at any one time, the pitcher and two fielders. No roster changes will be allowed under any circumstances, after play begins.

11. Players in a Game: Teams unable to field three rostered players at the beginning, or any time during a game will forfeit that game. Batting lineup must consist of everyone on your team who is present, and cannot be altered. If a player shows up late, they can be placed at the bottom of the batting order as long as you have not gone through it once. Three and only three players may play in the field at any time. When utilizing more than three players on the team, if a player is unable to continue playing or is removed from the game for any reason, that player may not re-enter the game. That player’s at-bat in the order will become an automatic out for the remainder of that game.

12. Positions &amp; Switches: Outfielders may position themselves anywhere in fair territory. Position players may switch defensive positions at any time. Regardless of position switches, batting orders will stay the same for the duration of games.

13. Substitutions: Fielding and pitching substitutions may be made during an inning. However, once a player leaves a game, that player may not return to the same game. If a pitcher receives a substitute, they cannot return for the remainder of the game. Exception: If a player suffers a tournament-ending injury, a player who has previously left the game may re-enter that game as a sub. 

14. Innings and Slow Play: All games will be 4 innings or 35 minutes, whichever comes first. Teams suspected of stalling (purposefully failing to throw or swing at hittable pitches) may be cited for “unsportsmanlike conduct” and removed from the tournament.

15. Pitching: There are no limitations. Pitchers may throw however they see fit. Pitchers may not re-enter the game as a pitcher under any circumstances. Pitchers must face at least one complete batter before being replaced by a relief pitcher. If a team has expended all pitchers and is on their last pitcher, that must finish the game as the pitcher. New pitchers may receive up to 7 warm up pitches before entering a game. The pitcher may receive up to 3 warm up pitches before any given inning.

16. Pitching Distances: The competitive division will pitch from 45 feet. The recreational division will pitch from 42 feet.

17. At Bats: There are no called balls or strikes. A hit-by-pitch is a ball. There are no intentional walks. Batters may strike out swinging. Batters may choose not to swing at any pitch. Batters who intentionally throw their bodies in front of pitched balls that are headed towards the strike zone will be called for batter’s interference and called out. A batter&#x27;s hands are considered part of the bat, balls striking the hands are considered either live or foul balls. One-handed batting will not be allowed for non- ADA players.

18. Infield Fly Rule: There is no infield fly rule.

19. Base Hits and Home Runs: All fair balls landing over the designated home run fence will be home runs. A ground ball past the pitcher and lines between the bases shall be counted a single. A double is any ball that reaches the outfield on the ground. A triple is a ball that hits the fence in the air. For further details see the field dimensions diagram.

20. Base Running: There is no base running, ghost runners only. Ghost runners advance the same number of bases as the hitter. One base on singles, two bases on doubles, and all ghost runners score on triples and home runs. On walks, runners only advance if forced.

21. Mercy Rule: There is no mercy rule. Teams may score as many runs as they’d like in any given inning.

22. Pool Play: Each team will play 4 pool play games to qualify for the playoffs. There will be blind draws to determine pool play matchups and game times. Tournament fee must be paid in full prior to the blind draw.

23. Extra Innings: Extra innings will begin with a runner on 3rd base until the game is completed.

24. Western Wiffleball Classic Commission’s Discretion: The Commissioner may resolve any and all conflicts regarding the interpretation of the above rules – or any loopholes therein – at their discretion. Commissioners will not rule on judgment calls.

*The only rule difference between the competitive and recreational divisions are the strike zone dimensions that can be found above

Home Run Derby Rules
• $5 to enter
• Participants do not need to be registered players.
• The competition will be open from 9am (start of games) until 4pm.
• The batter chooses their pitcher
• The batter has 7 outs. Every hit not resulting in a home run is an out.
• At the end of the 7 outs the batter&#x27;s turn is up.
• Each ball hit over the fence or the designated line on the ground is counted as a home run.
• Pitches can be thrown either overhand or underhand.
• The person with the most home runs at the end of the allotted time is the winner.
• Batters can play as many rounds as they want.
• A tie for first is settled by another round of 7 outs, the most home runs in the tie breaker round declares the winner.
• Reporting home runs to the scorekeeper is the responsibility of the batter and the honor system is to be used.
• A trophy shall be awarded to the day’s top home run batter
