Click here to join today.</a></p><h2>Structures of Consciousness: An Exploration of the Work of Jean Gebser (Online)</h2><h3>Domains: Mapping Tools, Contemplative Practice</h3><p>What does ever-present consciousness mean? How does one "transcend and include" anyway?</p><p>You may be familiar with the integral meta theory developed by integral philosopher Ken Wilber, but did you know that philosopher, linguist, and poet Jean Gebser was one of the sources WiIber used in creating his theory? Beginning in the 1930s, Gebser discerned that through the ages humanity has displayed different types of consciousness. He described these as five structures starting with the most wholistic Archaic and moving through increasingly more complex and individualistic Magic, Mythic and Mental. The final structure is Integral which is when all of the structures are working together. Modern humans are mostly aware of the Mental structure and according to Gebser, to overcome our divisive nature we need to allow the Integral structure to come forth and include what many of us think we have transcended and left behind.</p><p>An overview of the structures and how they operate, in both positive and negative ways, will be covered. Also, in order to bring this "head work" more into the body, this course will include meditations each week on an aspect of this philosophy, e.g., the magic gut, the mythic heart, and the mental head.</p><p>A long time Hive member, Ed is a retired engineer with an MA in Theology and is a sendee of The Center for Action and Contemplation's Living School.
