Screenwriting: Rooted in Decolonization and Abstract Thinking

TheAfrican American Art and Culture Complex(AAACC) is a community based, 501(c)3 arts and cultural organization. Our mission is to empower our community through Afro-centric artistic and cultural expression, mediums, education and programming.We are dedicated to inspiring children and youth to serve as agents of change, cultivating their leadership skills and fostering a commitment to community service and activism. In addition, we encourage, support and promote the work of young, aspiring Bay Area artists. We also strive to develop partnerships with organizations that are similarly committed to our mission, and offer our space to the community for special events.

African American Art & Culture Complex

The seminar will support the Black communities of San Francisco in creating, discovering,  and writing narratives for cinema.

<p><strong>The Black Storytelling Seminar</strong> will support the Black communities of San Francisco in discovering and writing lived experiences, speculative fiction, experimental and documentary narratives for the cinema screen. The workshop will develop a political framework, abstract mindsets, critical thinking, and technical skills for writing for the screen. The workshops are Black-centered to support the community, residents, and storytellers within the Historic Fillmore District. The seminar aims to expand imaginations for past, present, and future storytelling for current and future media platforms. Each workshop will guide participants through decolonization ideas, experimental artists, liberation texts, and practical skills of the craft. Participants will investigate traditional cinema tools and define a cinema space that best represents ancestral, cultural, and ethnic ways of knowing and telling stories.</p><p>Workshops will include lectures, workshops, hands-on training, and craft discussions on screenwriting, acting, design, fundraising, and cinema making. Workshops will run through October 2022.</p><p>The Black Storytelling Seminar is hosted by Indigo Impact and the African American Arts and Culture Complex.</p>

<p><strong>Screenwriting Rooted in Decolonization and Abstract Thinking</strong> is a 2-Day workshop on storytelling with a political center. The class aims for participants to develop a distinct grammar, style, and narrative when working in the screenplay format.  In class, we develop an individual praxis to approach screenwriting as a tool to deconstruct traditional and colonized ideas of story, character, structure, practice, and process. Participants develop a personal writing process to create a short work for publication, release, or production.
