<h1>Disabled Activist Alice Wong and the Fierce Fight for Rights and Inclusion</h1>BE WEIRD WITH US: At Peculiar Book Club livestream, you chat directly with the authors! Stay for the zany shenanigans, specialty book-theme cocktail (definitely not poisonous), Davey the Master of Disguise, comic duo FingerGuns and LadyPaws, and new musical guests (indie folk, blues, and more).In Chinese culture, the tiger is deeply revered for its confidence, passion, ambition, and ferocity. That same fighting spirit resides in Alice Wong.I first met Alice Wong through my work at the BMJ Medical Humanities journal. I have come to know her as a friend, and to look up to her as a giant among activists--especially during the Covid pandemic, as she fought for the rights (and lives) of disabled people everywhere. Many of us as Peculiars know what it means to be denied rights, to be on the fringes, to be outside the perceived norms--and I know you&#x27;ll all be as excited and inspired by YEAR OF THE TIGER as I am.UPDATE: Alice has had a medical emergency this year, which she writes about <a href="https://disabilityvisibilityproject.com/2022/08/07/my-icu-summer-a-photo-essay/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">here</a>. We are still going to read, discuss and share Alice&#x27;s amazing book (and she has given us signed copies, so please follow the links), but she won&#x27;t be able to meet with us in person, as she had hoped. Instead we WILL be speaking with Wendy Lu at Alice&#x27;s behest. She is a senior staff editor at The New York Times and a global speaker on disability representation in the media. She is also a board member for the National Center on Disability and Journalism, working with newsrooms across the country to improve coverage of disability issues. (AND she writes contemporary middle-grade fiction in her spare time!) <h2>Speaker for the event: WENDY LU</h2>Hi there! I’m Wendy.I am a senior staff editor on the Flexible Editing desk at The New York Times, where I edit a variety of stories from across the newsroom — breaking news, science stories, political features, briefings, wellness stories, newsletters and more. I am also a global speaker on disability representation in the media and (occasionally) a national reporter covering the intersection of disability, politics and culture. Previously, I was an editor at HuffPost. I have written for Teen Vogue, Refinery29, Bustle, Men’s Health, Quartz, Columbia Journalism Review and others (take a look at some of my work <a href="https://wendyluwrites.com/aboutwendy/writing/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">here</a>).I am a proud disabled woman. Since birth, I’ve worn a tracheostomy (trach) tube that helps me breathe. I have a master’s degree from Columbia Journalism School and a bachelor’s degree from UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Media &amp; Journalism. I grew up in Boston and eastern North Carolina, and I spent my summers off from school in Shanghai, where my family is from. In my spare time, I enjoy watching horror movies, bullet journaling and trying out the best pasta recipes.
