Poly/Ana is a collective of people who envision communities gathering in harmony, learn from Nature’s intelligence, and nurture landscapes that will change the climate. We are regenerative landscape designers, permaculture experts, educators, volunteers, and beyond.At Poly/Ana, we deliver dynamic, immersive education programs: including workshops, webinars, and hands-on courses, inspiring individuals and communities to become active stewards of Earth’s living systems. By fostering meaningful connections to Nature and each other, we cultivate the skills, mindsets, and practices necessary to regenerate our shared planet. Our mission is to educate and empower communities as agents of change to honor and protect natural, living systems. Thursday, August 4th, our host Rick Halsey of the Chaparral Institute and Poly/Ana invite virtual attendees to explore and redefine our sense of self. Rick has seen disasters first-hand. He survived his own trial by fire as a firefighter when he gained a new perspective. Find yourself and attain greater knowledge of your place in the ecosystem. Together we will reconnect with Nature in a fire-prone environment.This event is free to attend. Donations are encouraged. All donations help fund the budding nonprofit Poly/Ana and its mission to educate and benefit the environment. Please only sign up if you plan on attending.Join us as we explore how to learn to live with Nature again through local native habitats, especially the chaparral. For more than two million years we evolved outside, in Nature, driven by our instincts. Over the last several thousand years, our newly conscious minds have tried to reconcile the conflict between the demands of civilization, social expectations, and our ancient, wild selves. Yet despite our best efforts, the conflict persists, causing many of the personal, social, and environmental problems we face today, including our failure to live safely in fire-prone environments. ----------------------------------BIOBesides being the director of the California Chaparral Institute, Richard W. Halsey is also a writer, photographer, and most importantly, a guide to help others reconnect with Nature.Halsey has given more than 500 presentations and written numerous books, research papers, and articles over the past 15 years concerning chaparral ecology and the importance of reestablishing our connection with Nature. Richard also works with the San Diego Museum of Natural History and continues to teach natural history throughout the state. He founded and has been leading the Chaparral Naturalist Certification Program over the past seven years. The second edition of his book, Fire, Chaparral, and Survival in Southern California, was awarded the Best Nonfiction-Local Interest Book by the San Diego Book Awards Association.Richard earned undergraduate degrees from the University of California in environmental studies and anthropology, and a graduate degree in secondary education. Richard taught biology, physics, and environmental science for over thirty years in both public and private high schools, was honored as Teacher of the Year for San Diego City Schools, and was awarded the Christa McAuliffe Fellowship that provided him the opportunity to write his first book.
