Peking University Alumni Association of Northern California (PKUAANC) is a non-profit organization ( IRS 501 (c)(3) ) dedicated to connecting Peking University alumni in Northern California. In the spirit of the treasured legacy of Peking University - Science and Democracy, PKUAANC organizes social, academic and business activities with the purpose of assisting the professional and personal growth of our alumni, promoting communication between people in America and China.PKUAANC was officially founded in May 1992 with the efforts of many alumni. As a successful scientist, both in academia and industry, Dr. Wei also enjoys herself as a traveler and volunteer around the world. In this workshop, Dr. Wei will share her experiences and wisdom on how to live her life in these multiple roles as a world citizen.
Speaker Bio
From 1979 to 1983, Yingfei Wei studied at Peking University, majored in Biochemistry. In 1983, she joined the CUSBEA program and went to the English training camp at Guangzhou Zhongshan University, where she met her future husband. On August 1, 1984, Yingfei came to the United States to study for her Ph.D. She received Ph.D. in Biochemistry from UC Davis in 1990 and went to Harvard School of Public Health for her Postdoctoral training. She got married in 1986 and had two boys. In 1993, Yingfei joined the newly funded Human Genome Sciences Inc. in Rockville Maryland with another six CUSBEA fellows from Harvard, including her husband. During her tenure at HGS, she made serious discoveries on human DNA repair genes, which led to early prediction of certain cancers. 
Yingfei left HGS in 1998 and move back to San Francisco bay area with her family. She joined the Bayer Biotech Research Center in Berkeley and worked there till 2004 as a director of Cell and Analytical Biology.
From 2006 to 2012, Yingfei served as the Chief Scientific Officer for 3SBio, a Chinese biopharmaceutical company. 3SBio became the first Chinese biopharmaceutical company listed at NASDAQ in 2007. 
In spring of 2013, Yingfei joined a Semester-at-Sea program as a “Life-Long-Learner”. During this trip, she cruised around the world, took undergraduate courses on the ship and met numerous interesting people, including Desmond Tutu from South Africa. This trip changed her view of how to live her life. She subsequently retired from her roles in life science and focus on reading, travel, charity work, and taking care of the elderlies in the family. In the past a few years, Yingfei has traveled to more than fifty countries around the world including Antarctic Ocean, Cuba, and Bhutan. She sailed across the Pacific Ocean from New Zealand to Hawaii in 2015. 
Starting in 2014, Yingfei goes to Yunnan to teach summer camp as a volunteer every summer. She also involved in the “担当者行动”to donate books to the elementary schools in rural areas in Yunnan. She and her husband have continuously sponsored Chinese graduate students through the Ray Wu Society to award and advance their research in life science. They have also invested and/or cofounded a few start-up biotech companies to help the growth of young entrepreneurs.
