Politics has always been performatory and performance—on and off the stage—has always impacted on politics. Yet something qualitatively new has been happening. Over the last hundred years, the creative activity of performance has increasingly left the stage and revealed itself to also be an inherently political activity. This five-week Zoom-enabled conversation led by Dan Friedman, Artistic Director Emeritus of the Castillo Theatre, will explore historic and contemporary examples of performance as an activity intentionally entered into as a means of creatively engaging social issues and conflict—that is, as a means of exercising power.This seminar will interweave the reading and discussing of short excerpts from Friedman’s recent book, Performance Activism: Precursors and Contemporary Pioneers with a collective exploration of emerging performance activism around the world.<h3>Zoom Meeting Dates:</h3>Sundays July 10 - August 14, 10:30 am - 12:00 pm Eastern

Dan Friedman is the managing producer of the East Side Institute’s podcast, “<a href="https://eastsideinstitute.org/resources/multimedia/podcasts/all-power-to-the-developing-podcast/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">All Power to the Developing</a>,” and project manager of “<a href="https://honorscollege.uncg.edu/news-events/lets-learn/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Let’s Learn!</a>” a global community-engaged educational project of Lloyd International Honors College of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in collaboration with the East Side Institute. He is a co-founder of the <a href="https://www.castillo.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Castillo Theatre</a>, where he served as artistic director for over a decade. He is a playwright, theatre director and theatre historian. His book, <a href="https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-030-80591-3" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Performance Activism: Precursors and Contemporary Pioneers</a> has recently been published by Palgrave.
