Title: Video-Based Learning AnalyticsSummary: Video has become ubiquitous in blended and fully online learning contexts. This has been fueled by the recent increase in student expectations for flexible learning opportunities and the relative ease of video production with accessible off-the-shelf video recording and editing tools and streaming media platforms. The rise in the use of videos in educational settings has been closely followed by an increase in educational research exploring the role of video in the learning process and how educational video, including active learning strategies such as video annotations and in-video quizzes, contribute to student learning. Data about students&#x27; interactions with educational video, often available from digital learning platforms in the form of clickstream log data, has been used in numerous learning analytics (LA) studies to shed light on student engagement and learning strategies. The ultimate objective of such studies has been to support teachers and instructional designers in further improving video-based learning activities and /or help students reflect on their learning processes and outcomes through feedback provisions. The objective of this tutorial is to provide an overview of the learning analytics research focused on educational videos. The first half of the tutorial will present the rationale and motivation for video-based LA (i.e., why and how it could be useful), explore the types of questions it could help answer, and point out some of the challenges associated with video-based LA. The second half of the tutorial will be more technically oriented, focusing more on the practical aspects of video-based LA.
