Reception and Walls of Respect: Norman Parish and the Parish Art Gallery

Located in the heart of Georgetown at the intersection of M Street & Wisconsin Ave, the City Tavern has long been a center of activity in the city and  is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Originally constructed in 1796, the City Tavern functioned as both an inn and a major hub of civic life in the area during the early Federal period. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and other Founding Fathers frequented the Tavern during this time.The City Tavern Preservation Foundation is an independent 501(c)(3) organization with the mission of preserving one of the oldest Federal period buildings and the sole remaining founding-era tavern in Washington, D.C. and conducts tours of the building and offers educational and civic programming to the public.

Walls of Respect: Norman Parish and His Gallery

A documentary featuring the life of a late African American artist who owned a Georgetown gallery will be previewed June 6 and 7 at the City Tavern Club in Washington, D.C.

A documentary about the life of late African American artist and Georgetown gallery owner, Norman Parish, will be previewed June 6 and 7, at the City Tavern Club in Washington, DC.

"Walls of Respect: Norman Parish and the Parish Art Gallery" tells how an artist who was born in the humble Ninth Ward of New Orleans became an accomplished artist and successful businessman with a gallery in the tony Georgetown neighborhood. The Parish Gallery became one of America's best-known Black-owned galleries, featuring the works of about 170 artists for more than two decades before it closed in 2013.

The documentary includes interviews with several artists who exhibited at the gallery and recognizes the significance Parish had on artists and the D.C. culture.
Walls of Respect incorporates perspectives of family members who knew Parish during his pre-civil rights era childhood in New Orleans and later in Chicago where he attended the School of the Art Institute. Curators provide perspective on Parish's own artistic legacy.

Parish was also one of the creators of the famed Wall of Respect, the former 1960s Black pride mural in Chicago, which is credited with sparking similar murals globally.

Walls of Respect incorporates work from exhibitions and promotional materials that are now housed in the Smithsonian's National Archives of American Art, which holds the Parish Gallery papers.

Walls of Respect is directed by Susan Ericsson, a college professor. The executive producer is Norman Parish III, a journalist and the artist's son.
