Harnessing the Power of Big Team Science to Discover Generalizable Insights in the Social Sciences - Dr. Nicholas Coles

Big team science has been leveraged to both discover and address issues about generalizability in the social sciences. Specifically, big team science projects have highlighted how meaningful variability in scientific conclusions can be produced by differences in (a) the design of studies, (b) the execution of studies, and (c) the processing/analysis of data—leading some to declare the existence of a “generalizability crisis” (Yarkoni, 2020). Simultaneously, though, big team science initiatives like the Psychological Science Accelerator have shown how this collaboration model can address the generalizability crisis (Coles et al. 2022). This includes projects that (a) test many paradigms, (b) collect data in multiple settings, and/or (c) systematically explore a myriad of data processing and modeling decisions. In this talk, Dr. Nicholas Coles will review these developments and their implications for future small- and large-scale research in the social sciences.Dr. Nicholas Coles is a Research Scientist at Stanford University, the co-director of the Stanford Big Team Science Lab, and the Director of the Psychological Science Accelerator. He conducts research in affective science, cross-cultural psychology, and meta-science. In affective science, Nicholas seeks to understand the social, cognitive, and physiological processes that underlie emotion. Much of his research here has focused on the facial feedback hypothesis, the idea that sensorimotor feedback from facial expressions can impact emotional processes (e.g., that smiling can make people feel happy). In meta-science, Nicholas works on building research infrastructure that allows researchers to more efficiently obtain knowledge about psychological phenomena.
