Applying Lean and Six Sigma Concepts to Your Compliance Program Audit: Seeing the Trees and the ForestThis presentation explores how incorporating lean and six sigma concepts, including but not limited to the Kaizen event, the SIPOC diagram, process mapping, and the DMAIC principle, can lead to an easily applicable, effective, and leadership-supported compliance program. In June 2020, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) Criminal Division published updated guidelines for evaluating the effectiveness of corporate compliance programs. Undergird by three primary questions – a) Is the program well designed? b) Is the compliance program adequately resourced and empowered to function effectively? c) Does the compliance program work in practice? The attendees of this presentation will gain an understanding of how lean and six sigma concepts may be utilized to assess whether their policies and procedures align with the DOJ guidelines.Presenter BiographyAmber Nicole Ying, Esq. is a native of Indianapolis, Indiana. Ms. Ying earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor and her Juris Doctor from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law. She is admitted to practice law in the states of New York and Indiana. She obtained her Lean/Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification in 2019.Upon graduating from law school, Ms. Ying relocated to New York City where she began her career in the investment management sector, focusing on secondary market trade regulatory compliance. She then relocated to London, England where she directed the trade compliance department for a private investment management firm. She returned home to Indianapolis in 2008 where she fostered her passion of helping individuals and businesses navigate complex legal and regulatory landscapes. In her private practice, Ms. Ying helped small businesses develop governance documents, reviewed and drafted contracts and resolved related disputes, and helped individuals with estate planning matters. As the sole in-house legal counsel and regulatory compliance professional for an online college, she principally advised the administration and other stakeholders on complying with state and federal regulations, drafted and advised staff on internal policies, and participated in board governance matters. To hone her negotiation skills, Ms. Ying then served as a defense attorney with a major insurance company. Following a calling to public service, Ms. Ying accepted a position directing the Internal Affairs department and later the Compliance and Ethics department and serving as the Ethics Officer for an Indiana state government agency. In these roles, she investigated allegations of fraud, waste, and abuse of state assets and resources; helped teammates understand and incorporate state and federal laws and internal policies into the performance of their daily job duties; provided guidance on the State Code of Ethics; represented staff before the State Ethics Commission; and represented the agency before state and federal entities. ----Note: This is an online event.
