HIV/AIDS UPDATES  in Marginalized Communities/ Mental Health

This presentation will provide an update on the disparities in marginalized communities in regard to HIV/AIDS in light of COVID-19.

The COVID -19 pandemic has shed light on already existing health disparities in Black and Brown communities. It, like HIV/ AIDS also disproportionately impacts marginalized groups, such as Black/African American and Latinx communities, women, people who use drugs, men who have sex with men, and other sexual and gender minorities. We are still learning about how COVID-19 affects people with HIV, however it is imperative this population has the support and education to maintain their health and well-being. Psychologists and other Mental Health professionals serve a key role in this, however must be informed to be effective.The webinar serves as an update of issues pertinent to the treatment of HIV/AIDS populations, in order to inform mental health professionals who are working with this population and the community. Particular focus will be on Black and Brown and LGBTQ communities. The Attendees will:<ul><li>Be able to recognize cultural issues in HIV/AIDS </li><li>Be able to recognize the impact of COVID-19 on HIV/AIDS</li><li> Have knowledge of updated transmission rates</li><li>Recognize thought patterns contributing to poor treatment compliance and unsafe practices</li><li> Be able to identify updated treatments for the prevention of transmission of HIV/AIDS</li></ul>About the Presenter: Alftan Dyson, PharmD, BCACP, AAHIVP Alftan Dyson, PharmD, BCACP, AAHIVP is the US Brand Medical Director for Rukobia and Across Portfolio Initiatives at ViiV Healthcare. Prior to this role, she worked with the Innovation and Implementation Science team at ViiV on implementation research studies for long-acting HIV treatment and prevention medications as well as above-brand initiatives, such as exploring methods for disseminating the Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U) message in AL and MS. Prior to joining ViiV Healthcare in 2019 as a Medical Science Liaison, Alftan served as the Director of Pharmacy Services for 2 years with Medical Advocacy and Outreach (formerly Medical AIDS Outreach of Alabama) located in Montgomery, AL. In this role, she had oversight of all pharmacy services available to patients and assisted in overseeing the Medical Advocacy and Outreach 340B operations to ensure compliance with contract and in-house pharmacy operations. Dr. Dyson received a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2008 from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (Chattanooga, TN) and completed her Doctor of Pharmacy in 2013 from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
