TypeCooker (<A HREF="http://typecooker.com" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">typecooker.com</A>) generates "recipes" by picking randomly typographic requirements. "Broad nib, condensed, thin, capitals, no serifs", that sort of thing. Not all recipes might make sense, but each can be drawn well. In this workshop we will quickly solve the puzzles with sketches, and discuss the solutions with the group. It's rapid prototyping for type with markers, paper, scissors and whiteout. We'll learn all about the parameters of TypeCooker recipes, while going through several rounds of drawing, crits and challenges. You'll practice quick sketching techniques, try out new typographic vocabulary, cut things up and hopefully get lots of ideas. TypeCooker was developed at the Type and Media master at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and has tormented students and participants at countless workshops around the world.
This one-day workshop includes several rounds of drawing with a critique at the end of each. Suitable for all.

<A HREF="http://letterror.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Erik van Blokland</A> is one of the pioneers of digital type design and has been drawing and publishing typefaces since 1989 (available from <A HREF="http://fontfont.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Font Font </A>and <A HREF="http://houseindustries.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">House Industries</A>). One of them, FF Beowolf (with Just van Rossum) was included in the MoMA design collection in New York. Now a senior lecturer and head of the <A HREF="http://new.typemedia.org/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">TypeMedia</A> course at the KABK (Royal Academy of Art, The Hague NL) as well as a programmer of precision digital tools for type designers (<A HREF="http://superpolator.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Superpolator</A>, <A HREF="http://robofab.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Robofab</A>) he combines the analog with the digital on a daily basis. His work centers on typographic consulting, custom typefaces, and tool development.
