Huge demand for space at The Biosphere, a specialist lab facility tailored to the commercialisation of life sciences means private investors are being sought to lead on the expansion of Newcastle’s life-science success story. According to Savills there has been huge appetite from real estate investors, with an estimated £10 billion of live capital chasing UK science-led opportunities. The science real estate market has grown with many new markets emerging, demand growing and landlords and developers taking an innovative approach to delivering the right type of space. The North East of England’s £1.7bn regional life science eco-system employs almost 7,000 professionals in almost 200 companies, who operate globally from the region. Newcastle’s innovative life science, healthcare, and biotech sector has seen huge growth in recent years. Pioneers in pre-clinical research, diagnostics, rare diseases, and healthy longevity, with forward-thinking companies leveraging leading research and development support from world-leading universities and our outstanding NHS Trust. The strength of the ecosystem led Pfizer to open its first UK INSPIRE site in partnership with Newcastle University, a global Top 100 university for life sciences and medicine.​Located on Newcastle Helix, The Biosphere launched in 2019 as a publicly funded project, led by Newcastle City Council; it represented a significant investment for the local economy and showed a clear commitment to life sciences growth. The life science sector has been in the spotlight like never before, with the UK’s best talent and minds coming together over the past two years to support with the global effort in the fight against Covid-19. The North East of England was no different. There are many compelling opportunities for investments in the North of England, with more and businesses choosing these regions over the Golden Triangle. Due to this continued success Newcastle is looking to secure private sector investment to help satisfy the growing demand.
