Art Making in Community: Impressions of Identity and Culture

The Fowler Museum at UCLA explores global arts and cultures with an emphasis on Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas—past and present. The Fowler enhances understanding and appreciation of the diverse peoples, cultures, and religions of the world through dynamic exhibitions, publications, and public programs, informed by interdisciplinary approaches and the perspectives of the cultures represented. Also featured is the work of international contemporary artists presented within the complex frameworks of politics, culture and social action. The Fowler provides exciting, informative and thought-provoking exhibitions and events for the UCLA community and the people of greater Los Angeles and beyond.

Design and create your own block-printed bandana with images & symbols linked to nature, culture, and identity with Self-Help Graphics & Art

The Fowler Museum at UCLA

This two-hour workshop, inspired by<a href="https://fowler.ucla.edu/exhibitions/aboriginal-screen-printed-textiles/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> Aboriginal Screen-Printed Textiles from Australia’s Top End</a> and led by Marianne Sedowski, is intended for people ages 6+.Participants will design and create their own bandanas using images connected to nature and the environment, symbols of their own culture, and abstract depictions that express their individual and/or cultural identity. They will then learn how to carve these images on a block and print them multiple times in order to achieve the desired effect on their bandanas. Participants will also mix their own colors and reflect on the importance and symbolism of color as a means of expression. Space is limited to 25 attendees. This program is presented in partnership with Self-Help Graphics &amp; Art. Art-Making in Community: Come enjoy a range of art-making practices in a collaborative environment.
