AGPS Institute: Dependency and Counter-Dependency in Group

The Austin Group Psychotherapy Society is an interdisciplinary organization of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and counselors who share a mutual commitment to continuing professional development and to excellence in the practice of group psychotherapy.Over the past decade, the Austin Group Psychotherapy Society (AGPS) has gained national recognition for the quality of our training opportunities and the warmth and enthusiasm of our members.AGPS trainings and social events are designed to mentor new professionals and students, expand the knowledge and clinical skills of all members, and enrich and rejuvenate established practitioners.

Our culture glorifies independence, self-reliance, and autonomy as the hallmarks of maturity. Our more primitive dependency wishes are often strongly avoided in what we call a counter-dependent stance. In this institute we will look at our difficulty in having mutually interdependent relationships while exploring a full range of feelings and our defenses against them.

About the Presenter:
Jev Sikes, Ph.D., psychologist at <A HREF="http://deepeddypsychotherapy.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Deep Eddy Psychotherapy</A>, is an object relations group psychotherapist heavily influenced by Scott Rutan, Louis Ormont, and Yvonne Agazarian.  He has been leading groups for over 45 years.  In the early 70's he led 2 to 3 weekend ("marathon") groups a month around the country, and in the summer two week advanced personal growth labs for NTL in Bethel Maine.  In the 90's he led 11 group psychotherapy group sessions a week, including two couples' groups.  Jev has taught group psychotherapy at the university level and has also led training workshops in Austin and around the country.
Cost: $150 per person
Limit: 14 slots available
Levels of Experience: Open to all levels of group therapy leadership experience *Note: In the case of a dual relationship concern during registration, the therapist or supervisor will automatically receive the slot.  This event is open to members of AGPS.
CEUs: 9 Continuing Education credits offered for Psychologists, Social Workers, LPCs, and LMFTs.
Schedule: Saturday: 9:00am-5pm Sunday:   9:00am-12:15pm
Objectives: 
1. Understand the meaning of counter-dependency 2. Identify strategies to defend against dependency 3. Identify leadership skills that work to encourage clients to take risks in relationships
