The Center on Philanthropy & Public Policy promotes more effective philanthropy and strengthens the nonprofit sector through research that informs philanthropic decision making and public policy to advance community problem solving.  Using California and the West as a laboratory, The Center conducts research on philanthropy, volunteerism, and the role of the nonprofit sector in America’s communities.

Join us for a Distinguished Speaker conversation with Alberto Ibargüen on local journalism and democracy.

Alberto Ibargüen, President and CEO, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, joins us for our Spring Distinguished Speaker Series to discuss local journalism and democracy in conversation with our friend and board member, Cinny Kennard, Executive Director, Annenberg Foundation. Ibargüen, a former publisher of The Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald, has led the Knight Foundation’s work to support free expression and journalism, arts and culture in community, research on the media and democracy, nationally and in American cities and towns where John S. and James L. Knight once published newspapers.Drawing on her deep roots as a journalist, Kennard engages Ibargüen in a wide-ranging discussion of the vital role of local journalism in creating informed citizens, how changes in the media landscape has created news deserts and provided challenges for new models to sustain the “public good,” the growing role of mis-information and dis information, and how philanthropy can catalyze solutions that build trust in local news. The Distinguished Speaker Series is designed to raise the profile of philanthropy in Los Angeles and southern California. It has been headlined by some of the most dynamic leaders in philanthropy who have engaged leaders from the field, as well government and business. We are delighted to expand the reach of the Center’s Distinguished Speakers Series through digital programming and add to The Center’s conversations about philanthropy and its role in improving the places we live, and new models of local governance for community problem solving.
