Inspired by Riley Stearns’ dark comedy, DUAL, in which a woman miraculously recovers from a terminal illness only to be forced into a duel to the death with the clone she commissioned to comfort her loved ones, this program will examine representations on film of humanity’s dream of transcending its fragile mortality via cloning and the uploading of consciousness. Picking up where Cartesian philosophy and uncanny literature left off, filmmakers have used science fiction to expand the conversation of what transcending our bodies means to our understanding of individual identity and the logic of trying to live forever on a dying planet. We’ll look at decades worth of visionary science-fiction clips and end with an in-depth conversation with Riley Stearns about his cinematic inspirations and thoughts on the future of mankind.
