The Austin Group Psychotherapy Society is an interdisciplinary organization of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and counselors who share a mutual commitment to continuing professional development and to excellence in the practice of group psychotherapy.Over the past decade, the Austin Group Psychotherapy Society (AGPS) has gained national recognition for the quality of our training opportunities and the warmth and enthusiasm of our members.AGPS trainings and social events are designed to mentor new professionals and students, expand the knowledge and clinical skills of all members, and enrich and rejuvenate established practitioners.

This institute is designed to help therapists work with group members’ feelings of being an outsider. There are a number of ways in which a member may feel s/he doesn’t belong--gender, race, class, age—and the difference may be an actual divergence from the group norm, and it may also be a defense or resistance to the group process. We will also address the group leader’s feelings of “otherness” or “outsider” in the group and how that countertransference may affect her/his work with the group. We’ll begin the day with a brief didactic discussion of outsider status, then move into an experiential process group where our main task is to notice when we begin to feel as though we don’t belong with the group. Each participant will complete a short written notecard at the end of each process segment that will provide information regarding his/her emotional and/or intellectual state at that time. We will end the day with another brief didactic discussion, including the leader’s experience of the group.
