DanceAction Spring Workshop  2022

Carmen Caceres is a dance artist, originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina.She has been creating and presenting dance works in NY since 2011. Her works have been presented at Dixon Place, Eden’s Expressway, Green Space Studio, Battery Dance Company Studios, Triskelion Arts Center, and Center for Performance Research. In 2012 she founded DanceAction, a dance company that works as a creative platform to produce dance works in collaboration with musicians, designers, media and visual artists.DanceAction participated in numerous festivals and performance series in New York and abroad, such as Performance Studio Open House (PSOH) at Center for Performance Research, Take Root at Green Space Studio, and Under Exposed at Dixon Place.The company has recently presented an entire evening of works inspired by political activism and social justice at Center for Performance Research, Brooklyn, NY.DanceAction’s “Game Night” was part of the First International Contemporary Dance Festival of Mexico City (FIDCDMX) in August 2016. In July 2018 the company performed its most recent piece, "2 Minutes Hate" at Ticino in Danza, Festival and Campus in Ticino, Switzerland.

The Center at West Park

April 11th to 13th, 2022, from 9 AM to 12 PM at the <a href="https://www.centeratwestpark.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Center at West Park</a> This workshop for dancers, musicians, actors, performance artists or movers of any kind will explore three components of the performance experience, group improvisation through games, narrative development in a solo creation, and practice of presence. DanceAction’s artists Carmen Caceres and Lauren Hlubny and guest collaborator Alessia Della Casa will be leading each segment of this workshop. Over three days, participants will use game structures to access group improvisation, research and develop solo narratives, and deepen their practice in performance presence. This experience is made possible by the Center at West Park, Artist in Residence Program. It will serve as an incubator for ideas for DanceAction’s latest performance piece, Welcome to Imagi*Nation: Part 3, which will premier on May 25th, 2022.<ul><li>Monday 4/11: “Movement Improvisation through Games” - Carmen Caceres / “A Practice for Presence” - Alessia Della Casa</li><li>Tuesday 4/12: “A Practice for Presence” - Alessia Della Casa / “Movement Improvisation through Games” - Carmen Caceres</li><li>Wednesday 4/13: “Your Solo Narrative” - Lauren Hlubny / “A Practice for Presence” - Alessia Della Casa / “Connecting the Dots” - Dance Improvisation JAM moderated by Alessia, Carmen, and Lauren</li></ul>“Movement Improvisation through Games” - Carmen CaceresThis movement improvisation workshop will invite participants to immerse in a playful experience, exploring theater and movement games, structured dance improvisations, score-building exercises, partnering approaches, and open dance. By navigating these activities progressively, participants will gain awareness of the people they are moving with. They will experience clarity and ease in decision-making scenarios and develop a sense of alertness and a strong presence in spontaneous situations. They will also integrate the concept of “Yes and!” within the group practice of dance improvisation and enhance their listening skills in dance."A Practice for Presence" - Alessia Della CasaThis practice is designed to share movement experiences based on improvisation and personal body language to achieve a more profound expression of one's physicality. It questions the state of the body in performance, looking at 'presence' as the essence of it all, and it explores stillness as a powerful tool for awareness in movement. Through improvisation, how can we manage the connection with the present moment while linked to our body memory and launched towards discovering unknown places of the future? The artist suggests and shares several approaches to stillness and movement to gain awareness of the body and its mind. This approach explores "states of the body" for a given time period, where participants access specific body dynamics, sensations, and perceptions. Improvisation is used both as a tool for instant decision-making, allowing the investigation of a broad spectrum of qualitative connection with the present moment and a resource to access a personal sensitivity and sensuality.“Your Solo Narrative” - Lauren HlubnyApply tools gained through DanceAction’s Workshop to craft your own solo narrative. Incorporating elements of dance, theatre, and ritual, learn how to utilize your experiences to inform a solo creation. A solo can happen within the context of a character, an autobiographical show, an ensemble performance--or even a moment in a work by another choreographer. Inescapable elements of you exist, and these are your strengths. Utilize the facets of storyboarding to enrich your practice’s capability to not only build worlds but make those worlds accessible to an audience. You are your body of work, a conglomeration of memories. How is that body its own story? How can it be taken on a journey? How can you invite others in along the way? About the Artists:Carmen Caceres (DanceAction Artistic Director) is a dance artist originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina. She has performed and presented work at multiple prestigious venues in New York such as Dixon Place, Green Space Studio, Triskelion Arts Center, The Mark Morris Dance Center, Center for Performance Research, New York Live Arts, Judson Memorial Church, and Danspace Project. In 2012 she founded DanceAction, a creative platform to produce performing arts works collaborating with musicians, dramaturges, designers, and visual artists. Her works have been awarded multiple grants, including the City Artist Corps Grant and LMCC Creative Engagement Grant. This Spring, DA will be developing “Welcome to Imagi*Nation: Part 3” during the 3rd consecutive residency at the Center at West Park. DA has participated in numerous local and international festivals and performance series, including “Ticino in Danza” in Ticino, Switzerland, and “Human Lights Festival” in Atlanta. Carmen also produces her new performance &amp; improv-lab series Lo De Carmen in collaboration with Silvana Brizuela-Weigel. As a performer and collaborator, she worked with artists Lisa Parra, Sarah Berges, and Elia Mrak, among others. Carmen received a BA in Dance and Education at SUNY Empire State College and studied at the former Merce Cunningham Studio in New York. In her native city, she graduated from the National School of Dance and has studied dance composition at the National University of the Arts UNA. She moved to New York, where she received a scholarship to complete a 2-year certificate in Cunningham technique. In 2016 she completed a Certificate for Advanced Studies in Performance at SUPSI Academy of Teatro Dimitri, in Switzerland. In New York, Alessia danced for various artists such as Olsi Gjeci, Sally Bowden, Vanessa Tamburi, Anita Cheng. She started developing her choreographies and was selected to participate in the Choreographic Lab 2014 (Luzern, CH). She is the founder and coordinator of the festival Ticino in Danza and is a board member of IDACO NYC (Italian Dance Connection). In 2017, she was awarded a dance mediation grant by the Cantonal Department of Culture and Reso-Swiss Dance Network for the project Percorsodanza. Shortly after, she was selected for the young audience Lab residency to start developing her work Diventare Cappuccetto Rosso and chosen among the semi-finalists of PREMIO SCHWEIZ with the project DANSONOGRAPHY. Alessia leads L’Associazione Veicolo Danza in Ticino, Switzerland where she resides since 2015. This organization promotes artistic productions and education opportunities concerning contemporary dance and movement. <a href="https://www.veicolodanza.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">www.veicolodanza.com</a>Lauren Hlubny is the NYC Artistic Director of Franco-American company Danse Theatre Surreality (DanseTheatreSurreality.org). Hlubny's work centers on image-as-metaphor, physicality, social justice, and interdisciplinary communication, and her research focuses on the intersection of movement and storytelling. Hlubny has been invited to share works in France, Italy, Seattle, San Francisco, Birmingham, Knoxville, New Orleans, Portland, and in museums nationwide, including the Dali Museum. Hlubny studies Martial Arts and Anthropology in New York City, where she works as a director who originates works at venues such as Joe’s Pub, Triskelion, The Kraine, Shetler Studios, TADA, Mark Morris, and La MaMa. Fascinated by multifaceted productions, combat, and consent, Hlubny also enjoys working as a dramaturg and acting coach for choreographers, and as a choreographer for theatre and opera. Hlubny serves as co-director/dramaturg for Coriolis Dance’s “The Art of Seafaring” and as co-director/dramaturg for DanceAction’s latest work “Welcome to Imagi•nation Part 3” premiering May 25th at the Center at West Park.
