Kakuyon Shakur Mataeh - Trumpeter, Bandleader, and ComposerKakuyon Shakur Mataeh is a trumpeter, bandleader, and composer born in Newark, NJ. He was introduced to jazz music by his parents. He began his jazz education through the Jazz House Kids youth program led by Melissa Walker and Christian McBride, performing in their Montclair Jazz Festival nearly every year since 2014. Son of a painter/rapper, HiCoup, Kakuyon grew up playing at speakeasies and his father’s many art gallery exhibitions from a young age. This instilled a love for black performance arts at an early age, and taught him to appreciate its intersections. Kakuyon is in his junior year at Princeton University where he studies Computer Science, African American studies, and continues his jazz education under the tutelage of trumpeter Ted Chubb, bandleader James Darcey Argue, and saxophonist Rudresh Manhatthappa. Mataeh has played at notable venues such as Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, and more recently led his quintet at the 2022 Montclair Jazz Festival. He has also played with Christian McBride, Cyrus Chestnut, Don Braden, Trineice Martin, Mimi Jones, Vince Ector, and many other notable acts.

Destiny Diggs-Pinto- BassistDestiny Diggs-Pinto (Lé Queen) is a bassist, composer and bandleader born in Newark, NJ. She participated in the Jazz House Kids jazz training program under the direction of Christian McBride and Melissa Walker for 5 years. In 2019 Destiny was announced as one of the Young Arts Double Bass Jazz winners. She is attending the Manhattan School of Music on a full tuition scholarship under the tutelage of jazz great, Maestro Ron Carter. Destiny also studies privately with Marc Cary and Buster Williams. Aside from her studies at school, Destiny has played at Dizzys Club Coca Cola, Maureen’s Jazz Cellar, Carnegie Hall, Trumpet’s Jazz Club, and NJPAC (just to name a few). Diggs’ has played at the Montclair Jazz Festival every year from 2014 through 2019 and played the Central Jazz Festival in September 2018 and 2019. She also played the Hartford Paul Brown Jazz Festival 2021. Diggs’ has played with the Christian McBride Big Band, Christian McBride, DeeDee Bridgewater, Abraham Burton, Freddie Hendrix, along with many others. She also subs for bassists such as Christian McBride, Endea Owens, Reggie Workman, etc.

Miles Lennox- PianistMiles Lennox is a Jazz pianist/keyboardist and composer from Sunrise, Florida who began playing piano at the age of 7. He studied at the Dillard Center for the Arts with Christopher Dorsey and Stephen Scott. Currently, he studies at the Manhattan School of Music with Marc Cary. Lennox was the winner of the 2019 Essentially Ellington Big Band Composition Contest where his composition, “Open Windows”, was performed and recorded by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. He was a 2018 and 2019 winner in YoungArts for Jazz Piano and Jazz Composition in 2019. He received an “Outstanding Piano” award in 2018 and 2019 in the Essentially Ellington Jazz Big Band Competition. Lennox was also a finalist in the 2018 Miami Downtown Jazz Piano Competition. Lennox recently released his debut album, “Something to Say”, which features 11 original compositions. Lennox has performed with artists such as Sean Jones, Kurt Elling, Jon Faddis, Vincent Gardner, Wynton Marsalis, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Wycliffe Gordon, Victor Goines, Nat Adderley Jr., Stefon Harris, amongst many others.

Joseph Miller - SaxophoneJoseph Miller was born and raised in Miami, FL. He is currently a student at the Manhattan School of Music. Coming from a musical family, Joseph was always around music growing up and started to take interest. He began to play the saxophone in elementary school and took lessons until he attended New World School of the Arts where his musicianship really took shape. Joseph Miller has played with a lot of great musicians from Wynton Marsalis to Doc Severinsen and Christian McBride. Joseph Miller plans to further his knowledge of the music and build a name for himself on a greater scale continuing to build his career as an artist.
