You would think that a Black person would easily stand out in what is called one of the whitest states in the nation. Yet for some strange reason people of African descent have been invisible even while making a huge impact in the state.A native of Portland, Bob Greene is a retired Associated Press journalist and a Maine historian. His extensive research into his own genealogy led him to learn he is at least the eighth generation of his family to be born in Cumberland County. Bob has taught Black History of Maine at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) and was the 2021 recipient of the Maine Historical Society’s Neal Allen Award, which is presented each year for exceptional contributions to Maine History.
