In this, our last ZOOM Sunday Dinner until fall, we discuss this question: Is there anyone who is NOT welcome in the Earth justice movement?

This will be BT Irwin&#x27;s final Sunday Dinner as executive director! A few years ago, VEJ executive director BT Irwin directed a land use project for one of his clients, a private university in an affluent suburb. The project started as a solution to a business problem, an effort to use the university&#x27;s land to generate new revenue from the community. By the end of the project, the university and its neighbors were talking about things like pollution, river erosion, and water conservation and stewardship. In other words, what started as a project to build a private university&#x27;s bottom line turned into a community-wide effort to care for each other by caring for natural resources.This project brought together &quot;strange bedfellows&quot;--businessmen who tended to put profit before planet and environmentalists who put planet before profit. In the end, they found enough common ground to come up with a land use and water stewardship plan that pleased them both. This is one of the formative experiences that led BT to his work with Voices for Earth Justice, an organization that emphasizes interfaith cooperation. But over the last few years working with VEJ, BT began to wonder if his experience leading the land use project was like spotting a unicorn--a rare exception in a world where the rule seems to be that some people are always part of Earth justice work and some people are not. Everyone likely agrees that everyone has a place and a role in Earth justice work.But that it easier said than done. At this Sunday Dinner, we will have an open discussion about how the Earth justice movement can be inclusive and open while being sensitive to how exclusion from Earth justice work most often arises from the need for communities and people to protect themselves from power dynamics that often work against them. In a movement in which power is key to progress, how do we include everyone--even those whose historic use of power created many of the environmental and social injustices that the Earth justice movement seeks to correct?
