About this event

  • 3 hours

On June 19th, 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, Black people in the rural South were finally liberated from the shackles of slavery. Remarkably, it took until 2021 for this pivotal moment in history to be officially recognized as a national holiday. To honor the end of slavery in America, the MPU Chicago Chapter extends a heartfelt invitation to join us at our 2nd annual Juneteenth Tea Party.

This commemorative event is thoughtfully designed with a variety of activities to deepen our understanding of Juneteenth's historical significance. It provides a space to engage in meaningful conversations about freedom, reflecting on the journey from emancipation to acknowledgment. Moreover, we invite you to explore the rich history of tea, drawing connections between the cultural significance of this beverage and the resilience of a community that has triumphed over adversity.

Join us in celebrating the spirit of Juneteenth, as we sip tea, share stories, and foster a sense of unity in commemorating a momentous chapter in American history. Together, let us honor the struggles and triumphs that have shaped our collective journey toward freedom.
