SLUMBERJACK

IRIS Presents: SLUMBERJACK: The Dichotomy Tour SLUMBERJACK—DICHOTOMYA dichotomy contrasts two entirely different things. It can be a clash, an unexpected pairing, a merging of divergent worlds. On their debut album, titled DICHOTOMY, SLUMBERJACKdeliver their own dichotomy: a juxtaposition of sound, styles and concept.Across DICHOTOMY’s12 tracks, Perth duo Morgan Then and FletcherEhlers glide from pop to bass music, marrying stadium rock with strange synths, cinematic crescendos and world music samples. It’s a hybrid of sounds you wouldn’t expect to hear together but thatcome together to form something supernaturally beautiful. Exploring both their club-ready roots and more melodic leanings, DICHOTOMYis a journey that traversesboth where SLUMBERJACKstarted and how they have evolved. An album had always been part of the plan for SLUMBERJACK, but until recently, the pair’s busy tour schedule had forced it onto the backburner. Since 2014, Morgan and Fletcher have been in-demand names in theworld of bass music. They have collected multiple Gold records, toured across three continents, played the world’s biggest festivals, racked up over 150 million streams and collaborated with artists like Alison Wonderland, What So Not, Daniel Johns and Vera Blue. Their 2017 Fracture EP ranked #1 on the iTunes Australia electronic chart and featured two ARIA Gold-certified tracks, ‘Afraid, Unafraid’ and ‘Fracture’. Along the way, the pair have earned a reputation as two of the sharpest, most forward-thinking minds in electronic music. When the pandemic grounded them, it presented the perfect opportunity to begin work on a longer-form body of work. Morgan and Fletcher returned to their hometown of Perth after a period spent living in L.A. They got into the studio, began pulling out the old demos and started writing new music. After several months of feverish work, they emerged with DICHOTOMY.DICHOTOMYwas a chance to explore the wide range of sounds and styles that interested them, as well to usher in a newera of SLUMBERJACK. Making the album allowed the pair to “to write the songs we want to write” as artists.Inspiring DICHOTOMYwas a range of worlds, both natural and imagined. The pair took influence from the epic soundscapes of movies like Mad Max, Blade Runner and Annihilation. They wanted songs to feel, variously, like walking through a big open desert at night, driving down an empty road, or being caught in a gust of wind. At some points the album’s mood is cyberpunk and neon, at others it feels calm and at one with nature. As each song was also informed by Morgan’s synaesthesia --a sensory condition where music can trigger sensations such as colour, texture, or shape --it’s an album that feels particularly real and tactile, one where you can closeyour eyes as you listen and be transported to other worlds. The result is an album that feels vast and engulfing. But while they wanted DICHOTOMYto be grand in scale, SLUMBERJACKalso felt ithad to work in a variety of scenarios --something you could listen to while driving at night or put on in the background at a party.
The pair challenged themselves to createmusic that worked on multiple levels and presented a cohesive experience, even as it traversed different genres and styles. What allows the range of sonic influences on DICHOTOMYto work so well together is SLUMBERJACK’stechnical expertise, something the pair have honed over almost a decade. “The whole album was made completely on our laptop --no synths, no hardware, just our laptops and samples --which I’m proud of, and I think is a testament to where technology is at now and what you can achieve with it,” says Fletcher. It was a pointed choice. “This is, in some ways, our retaliation to people who tell us that analogue is better. I don't think analogue means more high quality,” Morgan adds. “Fletcher and I are very proud of this record because we were able to create what we think sounds analogue but is completely digital.” That artistic decision also added another level to the album’s dichotomy --it presents sounds that feel warm and real but are made entirely digitally. To bring the album to life, SLUMBERJACK worked with a range of collaborators. On the brooding ‘Better Off’, the single that has already enjoyed full rotation on triple j, they tapped Sydney’s Lucy Lucy for her raspy vocals. For the gentler sounds of ‘Not For You’ they paired up with Nicole Millar, while the anthemic, pop-tinged ‘Poison’ saw them work with Sydne eCarter. ‘And I’ brought in Washington vocalist Saint Claire and on ‘Paradox’, where the pair return to their bass roots, they recruited The Kite String Tangle. For the cinematic ‘Arc Second’ --the pair’s favourite track on the album --they teamed up with TINYKVT, aka Tori Letzler, who has worked as a composer and vocalist with some of the biggest names in film scoring (Hans Zimmer, Brian Tyler) on some of their biggest projects(Wonder Woman, Batman vs. Superman). At other points they brought in with producers Oddly Godly (for the living, breathing synthesiser sounds of opening track ‘Prologue’) and TWERL(on the experimental, futuristic soundscapes of ‘Pain’). Elsewhere, SLUMBERJACK explore the warm and fuzzy on ‘Memory’, delving into high voltage, rave-ready territory on ‘The Reprise’ and ‘Excalibur’. Closing the album out is the ‘Opia’s Theme’, which, in quintessentially SLUMBERJACK style, moves from a glitch-hop beat to a piano composition. One thing unified every collaborator they brought on board. “We didn’t make any career or strategic decisions for any of these collaborators,” Fletcher explains. “Every collaborator was someone we were interested in working with, someone we had a connection with, there was no business motives behind any of it. ”That decision --like everything SLUMBERJACK have done with DICHOTOMY--was about putting artistry above all else. Making an album was their chance to step beyond the DJ world and showcase the passion and breadth of influences that motivates them as musicians.“ We’re interested in a ton of different styles and making music which suits many different environments and scenarios. This album was about our chance to do all that without having to worry about anything else: just putting everything that we loveall in one place, but making it work together,” Fletcher says. On DICHOTOMY, that vision is realised.Support: - STAY TRU- SINGED- WERMZER______________________________________Doors 10:00pm | Wish Lounge Sat June 18th, 2022To book your private VIP Section & bottle packages contact us by email - vip@irispresents.com or call 404-578-4416______________________________________Believe.
