Title: Deep learning for genomics and bio-medicine Speaker: Professor James Zou, Assistant Professor of Biomedical Data Science, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, Stanford University The presentation will be in English. Summary: Recent breakthroughs in high-throughput genomic and biomedical data are transforming biological sciences into "big data" disciplines. In parallel, progress in deep neural networks are revolutionizing fields such as image recognition, natural language processing and, more broadly, AI. In this talk I'll explore some of the exciting intersection between these two advances. I'll describe some recent developments in deep learning and discuss how we can adapt these approaches to biomedical data.

Bio: I am an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Data Science, Computer Science (courtesy) and Electrical Engineering (courtesy) at Stanford University. I work on a wide range of problems in <A HREF="https://sites.google.com/site/jamesyzou/publications#ML" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">machine learning</A> (from proving mathematical properties to designing new probabilistic models) and am especially interested in applications in <A HREF="https://sites.google.com/site/jamesyzou/publications#compbio" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">human genomics</A>. I received my Ph.D. from Harvard University in May 2014 and was fortunate to be a member of Microsoft Research New England. Before this, I completed Part III in Mathematics at the University of Cambridge and was a Simons fellow at U.C. Berkeley.
