Timothy Pinnick shares how to navigate the often confusing world of African American church records in this online event (via Zoom.)

Churches have always been central to the African American experience. Locating information on African American congregations, however, can be extremely frustrating due to ineffective record keeping. But fortunately, there are a number of resources that researchers can use to uncover the names and activities of ministers, deacons, department leaders, and regular members. When coupled with effective research strategies, they can help you overcome the lack of record preservation at the local level. Some of the resources showcased during the session include a college thesis, African American conference proceedings and annual reports, secular and religious newspapers, and unique religious directories. Speaker Bio: Timothy Pinnick is an African American Genealogy Expert. During the last three decades, he has been hardwired into the world of African American genealogy, as a writer, speaker, instructor. His long-time love affair with researching in university libraries culminated in 2019 with the debut of a landmark workshop course entitled “Building an African American Research Toolbox” at the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research. In recent years, Tim created the business History and Genealogy Spotlight. It specializes in assisting libraries and individuals in identifying new and used African American books relevant to the African American research process.
