OHR Listening Lab: Fair Housing in the Time of COVID

The District of Columbia Office of Human Rights (OHR) was established to eradicate discrimination, increase equal opportunity and protect human rights for persons who live in or visit the District of Columbia. The agency enforces local and federal human rights laws, including the DC Human Rights Act, by providing a legal process to those who believe they have been discriminated against. OHR also proactively enforces human rights in the District through Director’s Inquiries, which allow it to identify and investigate practices and policies that may be discriminatory.

The relaunch of Listening Labs will provide a safe environment for individuals to engage in meaningful dialogue about hot-button issues.

As part of our Fair Housing Month celebration, this listening lab will be dedicated to discussing fair housing in the District. Specifically, the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on fair housing practices. We want to hear from current and prospective residents, housing providers and landlords, tenant advocacy organizations, real estate agents and everything in between. Our keynote speakers will include representatives from the Office of the Tenant Advocate and the DC Department of Housing and Community Development. After their remarks we will break out into smaller groups. During this time, individuals are encouraged to speak about the topic and express their opinions. OHR will be taking notes, but these opinions are completely confidential, and people will remain anonymous unless requested.
