The Nose (or the Conspiracy of Mavericks) is based on Ukraine-born Nikolai Gogol&#x27;s 1836 short story, &quot;The Nose&quot;, in which the nose of a pompous government official goes missing--a hunt ensues for the runaway nose, rife with send-ups of Russian class obsessions and the Empire&#x27;s monstrous bureaucracy. Gogol&#x27;s story became a centerpiece of Russian literature and has been filmed, staged and referenced ever since. Its pre-surrealist surrealism has attracted numerous animators, the latest is Andrei Khrzhan-ovsky, an old hand of the East European animation school, having made his first film in 1966. The director weaves a kaleidoscopic paean to the struggle of artist against the state/ status quo, setting it in the 1930s USSR, when Stalin&#x27;s repressions were at their harshest. Khrzhanovsky&#x27;s version is the story of young Dmitry Shostakavich composing an opera based on the Gogol story--an opera denounced by authorities and even colleagues. The film intertwines 1800s Tsarist Russia, 1930s USSR and the present--each expressed in a different style--from ink drawn and cut-out animation to live actors. Introduced by Kevin McNeer, director of Stalin Thought of You, and JRFF collaborator.The Long Journey is an homage to Italian director Federico Fellini, who beyond his masterful films--La Strada, 8 1/2, Juliet of the Spirits, Amarcord--produced a parallel world of drawings, many made as illustrations in his &#x27;dream journals&#x27;. Director Khrzh-anovsky brings these images to life, following Fellini, and wife Giullietta Masina, on a metaphorical sea voyage accompanied by characters from Fellini&#x27;s films. The odyssey includes romantic interludes, peeping toms, paparazzi, nude female boxers and even drawings by iconic Soviet director Sergei Eisenstein on the &#x27;Battleship Potemkin&#x27;. Narrated by Fellini co-writer Tonino Guerra: &quot;Here I am&quot;, Guerra begins,&quot;sitting on the couch in Fellini&#x27;s room, just as he&#x27;s drawn me.
