SAWCC Virtual Studio Visits Series

The South Asian Women’s Creative Collective (SAWCC) is a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to the advancement, visibility, and development of emerging and established South Asian women, nonbinary, genderfluid, and femme presenting  artists and creative professionals by providing a physical and virtual space to profile their creative and intellectual work across disciplines.

Join SAWCC for a series of virtual studio visits on three Thursdays through the month of March. We will take an inside peek into the artists’ studios and hear the artists talk about their current projects, inspirations, and working methods in a conversation with attendees. The featured artists work in a variety of media, from printmaking to sculpture, and each virtual studio visit will bring forth new insights on the artistic practices of three very different artists who have been a part of SAWCC over its 25-year history.March 10, 7-8 pm ET: <a href="http://www.sawcc.org/virtual-studio-visit-madhvi-subrahmanian/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Madhvi Subrahmanian</a>March 17, 7-8 pm ET: <a href="http://www.sawcc.org/virtual-studio-visit-mona-kamal/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Mona Kamal</a>March 24, 7-8 pm ET: <a href="http://www.sawcc.org/virtual-studio-visit-sadia-rehman/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Sa’dia Rehman</a>Born in Mumbai, India, Madhvi Subrahmanian currently works and lives in Singapore. She has exhibited in several solo and group shows both locally and internationally. Among the biennales and trienniales she has been invited to are the Korean International Ceramic Biennale 2019, (Gyeonggi); Indian Ceramics Triennale, 2018 (Jaipur); First Central China Ceramic Biennale, 2016, Henan Museum (Zhengzhou); and 3rd Contemporary Jakarta Biennale, 2014 (Indonesia). Madhvi’s works have been published in international magazines such as Ceramics: Art + Perception and Ceramic Review, and on the cover of Art India, the premier art journal in India, as well as books such as Contemporary Ceramics by Emmanuel Cooper. She is an elected member of the International Academy of Ceramics, a UNESCO affiliated organization in Geneva; ArtAxis and NCECA, international professional organizations based in the US; and Singapore Sculpture Society. Madhvi is also one of the founding members and curators of the Indian Ceramics Triennale. Madhvi is represented by Gallery Chemould Prescott Road in Mumbai. Her works are in institutional and private collections in Singapore, India, China, Thailand, Taiwan, and USA.Mona Saeed Kamal has an artist career that spans twenty years. She has exhibited both internationally and nationally, with recent solo exhibitions at Wave Hill in the Bronx and at GridSpace in Brooklyn, NY. In 2015, she had a solo exhibition at VM Art Gallery in Karachi, Pakistan. She also has exhibited in New Delhi, India at Gallery Espace and has exhibited extensively in Canada and the United States, including the Art Gallery of Calgary and the Harbourfront Centre and YYZ Artists’ Outlet in Toronto. In New York she has exhibited at Smack Mellon, Queens Museum, Exit Art, and Rush Arts. Mona has held residencies at the Banff Centre in Canada and the Sanskriti Foundation in New Delhi, and she was a media arts fellow at Bric Media Arts in 2015. She has received grants from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, PSC CUNY Grants for Adjuncts, the Ontario and Toronto Arts Councils, and the Canada Council for the Arts. Her work has been reviewed in the News International (Pakistan), Hyperallergic, and the New York Times. Mona received her BFA from NSCAD in Halifax, Nova Scotia and her MFA from Parsons the New School for Design. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn.Sa’dia Rehman (b. Queens, NY) is the current artist-in-residence at the Wexner Center for the Arts. Rehman has exhibited work at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Queens Museum, Columbus Museum of Art, the Kitchen, Kentler International Drawing Space, Ctrl+Shft, ABCnoRio, Five Myles Gallery, Center for Book Arts, Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU, and Pakistan National Council of the Arts. She was a recipient of the Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson Grant and Meredith Morabito and Henrietta Mantooth Fellowship. She has been awarded residencies at Abrons Art Center, Art Omi, Asian American Arts Alliance, Edward Albee Foundation, Vermont Studio Center, NARS Foundation, and AIM Bronx Museum. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, Harper’s, Art Papers, and ColorLines.For more info on each artist, click their names linked above.
