Writing the Bizarre: A Craft Class with Rajiv Mohabir

Get Lit! Programs is a non-profit literary arts organization housed within Eastern Washington University. Our program is responsible for Get Lit! Festival, the region’s only annual week-long literary festival. Get Lit! has grown over the last twenty years from a single day of back-to-back readings to a four day celebration of literature that brings a diverse line up of highly sought-after authors to our region, while also highlighting our talented local literary community. The festival offers free and low cost readings, writing workshops, craft classes, poetry slams, panel discussions, literary happy hours, and much more. Get Lit! Programs also runs Writers in Residence, a program that places published authors in local schools to teach 10-week creative writing courses to students who may not normally have access to a creative writing curriculum. It is our mission, both in our festival programming and our educational outreach, to advance the arts, celebrate diversity, and empower creativity.

Join us for a craft class with Rajiv Mohabir, author/poet of ANTIMAN, where he will teach us to write the strange in poetry and nonfiction!

Please come to room 309 in the Catalyst Building to join us for this craft class!Are you a fan of the strange, the unusual, and the uncanny? The French Modernist poet Charles Baudelaire said “Le beau est toujours bizarre.” (The beautiful is always bizarre.) Like this quote indicates, the strange and uncanny in lines of poetry surprise, add mystery, and add an air of spontaneity to any poem. But how does the poet craft works that live up to this axiom? In this poetry and nonfiction workshop you will be encouraged to approach writing to lead your readers into the unexpected. We will be looking at various strategies to invigorate our poetry with the unexpected, the strange, and the weird. We will read texts that employ erasures, excavations, stream of consciousness, and “found” language. Together we will use these methods to texture our language and to push our own capabilities as poets and writers to the brink of our imaginations and then some. The goal is for the student to create new works that excite and reflect the bizarre nature of the process.
